bones.6 Early calculus deposits require a long time of

maturation (about 1 year) to become a more crystalline

phase. Schroeder and Bambauer,7 using X-ray diffraction,

found brushite in initial stages (a few weeks) of

calculus maturation and whitlockite and hydroxyapatite

in old deposits (almost 1 year), while octacalcium

phosphate (OCP) was present in all stages. Tsuda and

Arends8 used Raman spectroscopy to study the mineral

phases in supragingival human calculi (between 1

and 6 months old), and did not find a significant

difference among the measured spectra. It should be

mentioned that diffraction methods present some line

resolution problems because OCP diffraction angles

are closer to HA ones; thus, structure identification

may be difficult in some cases.9 In addition, Raman

observations are influenced by the presence of organic

materials in calculus samples; furthermore, some peak

positions are especially dependent on the laser power,

and can produce chemical changes on the mineral

phases.9 In the present work, synchrotron radiation

analysis by X-ray fluorescence (SRXRF) was used. It

provides low detection limits, improves sensitivities,

and does not require complicated procedures of sample

preparation. This research attempts to study the

changes of trace-element concentrations and the evolution

of crystal phases of human supragingival dental

calculus as it maturates.
