Starbucks is increasing competitive pressure on independent coffeehouse, yet the independents are prospering right along with their giant competitor. This might be because the independents are so fearful of Starbucks that they implement improvements even before the chain arrives. It’s A Grind fixed up stores, improving customer service and staff training, too, when a Starbucks opened nearby. The independent’s sales have been rising 10 percent or more annually since then. Other independents have been prompted to ban smoking or to roast their own beans, two significant aspects of Starbucks’ operations. Focusing on local activities and preferences is another way for independents to compete successfully, through poetry readings, live jazz, works by local artists, and regional food choices.

It seems that Starbucks has not merely increased rivalry but also shifted industry dynamics in areas such as customers and new entrants. Although Starbucks and the independent coffeehouses are more profitable than ever, it appears that, for now, the customers are the big winners in this evolving industry.
