South Korea to resume U.S. beef imports in March

2006/1/14

South Korea announced on Friday it would resume importing U.S. beef in late March, after a two-year ban imposed because of mad cow disease.

South Korea, once the world third-largest export market for American beef, has been under pressure from Washington to lift the ban imposed in December 2003, after the first U.S. case of the deadly disease was discovered.

But Seoul will set import restrictions. A statement from the agriculture ministry said it would only allow in beef from cattle aged under 30 months, and then on condition that parts it regards as risky, such as ribs -- once one of the most popular imports -- were removed before shipping.

\"The government focused on safety issues in negotiating with the United States so we successfully removed ribs and other risky materials in importing U.S. beef,\" Park Hyun-chool, general director of the ministry\'s livestock bureau, told a news briefing.

The restrictions also call for other bone and materials Seoul sees as having a higher risk of carrying mad cow disease, such as spinal cords, to be removed before shipping.

South Korea said the deal would allow Seoul to reimpose the ban if there was another outbreak of mad cow disease in the United States.

"The government focused on safety issues in negotiating with the United States so we successfully removed ribs and other risky materials in importing U.S. beef," Park Hyun-chool, general director of the ministry's livestock bureau, told a news briefing.

    Park Hyun-chool

The restrictions also call for other bone and materials Seoul sees as having a higher risk of carrying mad cow disease, such as spinal cords, to be removed before shipping.

South Korea said the deal would allow Seoul to reimpose the ban if there was another outbreak of mad cow disease in the United States.
