標題:Environmental Knowledge and Attitudes in the New York City Watershed

A study of changes in public opinion surrounding the controversy of restrictive watershed regulations in upstate NY, based on data from the second of four surveys conducted in 15 towns within the New York City watershed, 1994- 1997. Results indicate that respondents were concerned about the environment & believed that the population contributed to environmental problems, but many were unwilling to make sacrifices on behalf of the environment. Watershed issues are identified, showing that while some were in favor of working with New York City to solve the problem, most favored a lawsuit against the city. The survey also confirmed a weak knowledge base among the respondents. Measurement of knowledge & attitudes according to characteristic indices of residence, gender, age, political affiliation, & education indicates that watershed attitudes were dominated by residence area. Education & political affiliation were most strongly correlated to general environmental attitudes, & that increased knowledge stimulated involvement in issues.
