What if you could see one , would you believe me then?
Dr Illingworth and the audience laughed louder.
It was at this point that the sensation of the evening took place – a sensation so dramatic that nothing like it has ever happened in the history of scientific meetings.
Professor Challenger raised his hand as a signal and a journalist on this newspaper , Mr Malone, made his way to the back of the platform. Then he dragged a large packing-case over to Professor Challenger’s chair.
The audience fell silent as the Professor opened the lid of the box. He peered into it, snapping his fingers several times. A moment later, with a scratching and a ratting, the most horrible creature I have ever seen emerged.
The face of the creature was evil and horrible, with red eyes as bright as fire. Its long mouth was half-open, showing two rows of sharp teeth. Its shoulders were hunched and draped with grey, like an old shawl.
It was the devil of our childhood sitting in front of us.
People began to scream. Two ladies in the front row fainted. Professor Challenger put up his hands to try to quieten his audience, but this movement alarmed the creature next to him.
