There is a statement that in class, teachers' looks and attitudes leave different impressions on students. This viewpoint is greatly related to our topic. We all agree that native English-speaking teachers have the advantage over the local ones in Taiwan. Many people consider the United Kingdom (or the United States?) to be a powerful nation; and it causes many countries to think highly of English education.
We are lucky to find out this thesis. Many points the researcher made are close to our topic. For instance, our nation is not stringent in employing foreign English teachers. They are not carefully evaluated. Some of them don't understand standard English and make a lot of mistakes; some show no interest in English teaching but only focus on how much salary they may get, and so on.
The researcher interviewed twelve English teachers and this part is very intriguing. We can see as a result that most foreign English teachers come to Taiwan to teach for money; some of them are only high school graduates (no further educational background), but have high salary. The quality of these foreign English teachers starts to worry us.
Another part the researcher did on English is the globalization, which implicates politics, but we omitted it considering it is redundant.
In the last part, the researcher compared eight common teaching methods we see today. We come to a conclusion that what a teacher really needs is a right teaching method for students rather than keep thinking whether foreign English teachers' quality is good or bad. We think it is strange here. In the end, the focus is switched to teaching methods instead of foreign English teachers.
