1931 年,15 歲的王永慶放棄學業,隻身來到嘉義的一家米店做工。一年後,他用父親借來的 200 元錢,開了一間自己的小米店,當起了老闆,這不能不說是人生的一個大飛躍。

他身兼夥計與老闆,為了讓自己的米好銷一些,他挨家挨戶地去推銷,盡可能地多賣一些。

由於各家店的米從價格和品質上,都沒有太大的差別,王永慶為了能讓自己的米店更受歡迎,決定從品質與服務上下功夫。他在售賣之前,會將米裏的雜質認真地撿乾淨,使米的賣相更佳。

此外,他還主動為顧客送貨上門,而且到了客人家,他會先將米缸裏的舊米倒出來,再將新米倒入。他還會認真地記下客人家裏的人數,到了下一次需要買米的前兩三天,他便會將米送上門去。

此外,王永慶還會記下顧客發薪的日子,有的人在月初領薪,有的人在月底領薪,王永慶都會一一記在心上,待顧客的領薪日過後兩三天再去收帳。

透過這種細小處的用心,許多人感到這個小老闆不光賣的米好,而且服務也很周到,所以很多人都成子米店的固定客戶。王永慶的米店,生意也比以前好了好幾倍。

正如當時人們所講的一句俗語:「糶米賣布,賺錢有數。」 開米店不僅辛苦,利潤也非常微薄。這種刻苦的經歷讓王永慶認識到,人只有通過自身的努力,才能改善處境,而且做生意時,一定得比別人想得多,想得周到,才能贏得顧客。

隨著米店的固定客戶的增多,王永慶買來了碾米的設備,自己碾米自己賣。後來,他又租下了一家規模較大的碾米廠,把碾出的米批發給別的米店。此時的王永慶,終於踏上了走向實業家的第一步。

在自己當了老闆,生活條件有所改善之後,王永慶也沒有改變自己幼年時代養成的勤勞、節儉的習慣。他甚至連洗個熱水澡的錢都會省下來,他想,每天省三分錢,就等於多賺了 3 斗米的利潤。

    A folk adage which just as people at that time speak: ' Tiao rice sell cloth, make money of and know what's what. ' open rice shop not only works hard , the profit is but also very meagre . Such diligent experience lets Wang Yongqing realize , people only pass one's own efforts, could improve the situation , and while doing business , must more manily than others , think thoughtfully , could gain customers .

    With the increasing of regular customer of the rice shop, Wang Yongqing buys the equipment which crushes the rice, crush the rice oneself to sells. Later, the next one was bigger to crush the rice factory that he rented again, the rice that appeared crushing was sold in batches to the other rice shops. Wang Yongqing at this moment , set foot on the first step which moved towards the industrialist at last.

    Have worked as a boss in oneself, after the living condition was improved to some extent, Wang Yongqing has not changed the industrious , frugal habit that one's own childhood formed. He will be saved if he even has a piece of money of hot bath, he thinks, saves three fen every day, mean that make the profits of 3 dou of rice more.
