Personally I think a coat is usually longer, heavier, and thicker than a jacket.
A jacket is usually shorter and lighter so that we wear a 'sports jacket' but not a 'sports coat'! We call a coat that can cover our knees an overcoat, but there is no such thing as 'overjacket'. The above is purely a reasonable guess! Don't take it too seriously!
