Second language learners often have problems in revising their written work. This paper discusses aspects of writing that students focus on when revising, and the difficulty level of each of the aspects. An instrument for measuring revision practice at the textual level was developed for this purpose. Questionnaires were distributed to pre-university and diploma students doing English as a second language at two universities in Malaysia to identify aspects of revision that they have problems with. Students’ responses to the items in the questionnaire were analyzed using the Rasch Model. Results of the analysis indicated that in one of the universities, the students perceived quality of content as the most difficult aspect of writing, and referencing as the second most difficult. The reverse was true in the case of the other university. With the other variables, however, the same order of difficulty was found for both cohorts: adequacy of content, cohesion and coherence, and organization/structure. The possible reasons for the ranking are discussed.
