Dear Prof.

In 1990 and 1993, The Chung-Hwa Institute of

Buddhist Studies in Taiwan hosted two

international conferences on Buddhism. In 1994

the Taiwan Government appointed us the

organizer of "The International Conference on

Buddhism and Chinese Culture". Each of

these conferences provided for spirited

discussions among more than two hundred

scholars from all over the world. These

scholars presented a variety of papers covering

many aspects of Buddhism.

We are now in the process of planning The

ThirdChung-Hwa International

Conference on Buddhism scheduled to

take place on July 19th to 21st 1997 in Taipei.

It will be an opportunity for an international

forum of Buddhist experts and we would like to

extend our invitation to you to takepart in this

upcoming event. The Topic of conference will

be：

Topic： The "Earthly" Pure Land and

Contemporary Society

Sub-topic：

1.Building a Pure Land on Earth—

Humanism in Traditional Buddhist Thought

and Its ContemporarySignificance

2.Traditional Concepts of the Pure Land and

Problems Facing Contemporary Society

Your expertise in the field, and your

participation at the conference, would be of

great contribution to the studies of Buddhism in

the East and the West. Please find enclosed

Guidelines for the Conference(Enclosure 1

), and an Attendance Response (

Enclosure 2). Please kindly complete and return

the response form before October 31, 1996. If

there are any questions you are welcomed to

In 1994, the Taiwan Government appointed us the organizer of "The International Conference on Buddhism and Chinese Culture".

在1994年，台灣政府委任台灣中華佛教學會為 "佛教與中華文化國際研討會" 的主辦單位。
