這個字頗有趣，它的解釋有二種：

第一種如網友所述 NEWS分別代表東西南北，來自四面的消息，叫新聞。

另一種解釋，NEW＝新，而新的事務的"複數化"= +S，於是很多新鮮事，就叫新聞。

至於中文，新聞，聞者知悉也，就是聽到或知道某些事情，知道的東西是新的，也就是之前不知道的，當然是新聞。
