If you're going for all around better sound, JBL hands down. Bose is good at getting decent sound from a small system. They are also pretty easy to use, so most elder people love the idea of Bose. (Now wait a minute naysayers!)
One of the biggest issues with Bose's sound quality, is that there really isn't any. I love the idea of the Bose stores. Come in to try our products, compare it to nothing else and get on your way. Remarkable. If at all possible try to go to a store that allows you to compare a Bose system to a comparably priced JBL or pretty much any other system. Play the same clips or same music (tell the clerk that to take out the Bose demo disc you hit Power and Enter at the same time) and I know you will like the other system. BOse focuses on the midrange of sound, which is why there is an industry addage about "No highs, no lows, must be a Bose" and this holds true across their entire line. On Bose's home theater systems, there "subwoofer" isn't even called that by Bose, its their acousticmass module. THe reason being is that it can reproduce the sounds that really give the boom a director or producer intended you to hear. I hope this helps and if anyone was unclear, JBL is a way better system.
