Is the Easter Bunny male or female?

My neighbor's 5 year old really needs to know.

Now it's bugging me too.

    He's a boy.

The Easter Bunny is the semi-secularized version of the totemic rabbit or hare of the goddess Ostara (also known as Eostre, from whom "Easter," in its pre-Christian meaning as the festival of the Spring Equinox, takes its name), the Goddess of Spring. Ostara is a fertility goddess, and the remarkable fertility of the rabbit is the reason for its shamanic association with this goddess. The eggs of the rabbit represent the soul (eggs symbolize the universal soul in many mythologies and cosmologies around the world...consider the World Egg of several West African religions as well as the divine soul-egg of Mediterranean Basin mythologies), and the colorful eggs, paradoxically produced by a mammal (transcending species limits) and a male mammal at that (transcending sex limits) underscores the universal, magical, and world-affirming character of the Goddess' fertility. The egg, the rabbit, and the dawn are the three central symbols of the Goddess of the Spring Equinox.

So the Easter Bunny, Pagan symbol that he is, is always male.

The Easter Bunny has nothing to do with God by the by. And, it's a fictional rabbit. but it's often depicted wearing a waistcoat and such, so unless it's a cross-dresser (joking obviously) it's probably considered by most to be a guy. But it really probably doesn't matter one bit. It just depends on what Easter Bunny movie you're watching. They're probably all males in most of them, like the Rankin Bass films.

The Easter Bunny is male. The origins of the celebration are Pagan, when rabbits, because of their nature, symbolized fertility. Since the bunny drops an egg, or rather distributes them it's like a man distributing the fruitful seed. Spare the child the explanation but feel free to tell him it's male. LOL.
