How did the phrase "rebel without a clue" originate?

When Tom Petty used the phrase, the Mats fans were claiming that he stole it from Paul Westerberg. But then other people were saying Westerberg stole it from some other woman. Can anyone tell me any information about the origin of this phrase and its use in songs? Thank you.

Update:

Thanks, Kevin. Bonnie Tyler was the woman's name that I was looking for.

To everyone else, I should have specified I'm not interested in the phrase "rebel without a cause," but anything else on "rebel without a clue" would be greatly appreciated.

    EXTENDED REVIEW

the phrase rebel whit out a clue originated in somebody who copy it from another phrase as everyone has been saying and the phrase is "rebel whit out a cause" which was originated in the tittle of a book by psychiatrist Robert lender's 1944 , and was popularized in the film rebel whit out a cause from 1955.

so bonnie tyler copy it also.

"coincidently" jim steinman wrote the song and started working whit bonnie tyler in 1982 when two of the main caracters of the movie had just died nathalie wood in nobember 29 1981 and sai mineo was murder in february 12 1976 so it is obvious that people were talking about it and jin steinman came out whit the tittle then.

Jane, this isn't a complete answer yet, but it looks like Bonnie Tyler also had a song titled "Rebel without a clue"

    Still looking ...

(and I do understand that you want to know about the song lyrics, not the James Dean movie, or the phrase)

I can tell you that the original phase was coined in Hollywood as "Rebel Without a Cause" in 1955. A pretty ridiculous flick with James Dean and a bunch of other no names. Actually Thurson Howell the 3rd from Gilligan's Island was in it too...as James Dean's dad. It's about a High School kid who on his first day of school in a new highschool manages to flirt with the girlfriend of the leader of the gang and then ends up in a knife fight....and then he gets into a game of chicken with this gang guy toward the end of a cliff. Needless to say the gang guy dies. James dean gets the girl and Thurston Howell the 3rd gets some balls.

Rebel Without a Cause" was a James Dean movie. Then the expression, "He doesn't have a clue," came along. Put them together and you have, "Rebel without a clue."

It's a late 19th century euphemism which first appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1895. Some English-speakers stereotype the French as permissive about anything risque . This phrase, in which French refers to "bad language", is employed when the speaker feels compelled to use an obscenity despite having listeners who might be offended. It is thought that the term French is employed in this sense as it already had a history of association with things considered vulgar. As far back as the early 16th century, French pox and the French disease were synonyms for genital herpes, and French-sick was another term for syphillis. The Oxford English Dictionary also equates the adjective French with "spiciness", as in French letter for "condom", French kiss (1923) and French (i. e. "sexually explicit") novels (from 1749).

    Rebel Without a Clue

From the CD Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire

    Written by Jim Steinman

    You're a tough tail-gunner in a pitch black Chevy

    Cruising in the moonlight

    Ooh your aim is steady

Your eyes are hungry and your hands are ready

You shot me where you wanted

You put me in a daze

No matter where you go, you'll always be a stranger

Getting into trouble, getting off on danger

Riding out of town like a cool lone ranger

When there's nothing to lose, you gotta call your own plays

Did anybody say something incredibly stupid

    Like there isn't any paradise

But I remember the songs and I remember the story

I remember the thrills and I remember the glory

So hold me - hold me in your arms

    Deliver me from growing old

Hold me - hold me in your arms

    Shelter me from going cold

I'm a shot in the dark without you

    A rebel without a clue

    Rebel without a clue

I don't know what to say and I don't know what to do

Standing on the corner in my boots and my leather

a little over the edge, a little under the weather

Just a rebel without a clue

I'm tired an lonely and crying for you

I know just when to sulk and I know just how to pose

    Dirty Harry to Madonna

I've been learning all the roles

So hold me baby, hold me a little longer

Need me baby just a little stronger tonight

Move it darling move a little quicker

Prove it darling blood is really thicker tonight

Drive on darling drive a little farther

Dream on darling dream a little harder tonight

Teach me baby teach me how to love you

Without me you're just another rebel without a clue

It's been a long hot summer an it's just the beginning

So keep our motor running and your tires spinning

So many places that I've wanted to be in

Take me where you're going - away beyond above -

We'll see a little action, relieve a little tension

Stuff I'd like to try that I shouldn't even mention

I've gone so far already c- I'm way beyond redemption

There's nothing to it really - I think they call it love

Did anybody say something incredibly stupid

    Like there isn't any paradise

But I remember the songs and I remember the story

I remember the thrills and I remember the glory

So hold me - hold me in your arms

    Deliver me from growing old

Hold me - hold me in your arms

    Shelter me from going cold

    Counterpoint to chorus

(This verse was included in the sleeve, but didn't make it into the song)

I'm on a freeway to nowhere

    Running on empty time

I gotta ticket to somewhere, anywhere

A long way down the line

I wanna go on the red light

I wanna go on the green

I wanna go on all the colors I see in between

There ain't no holding us down
