Why are most airplanes painted white?

Does the color have an impact on flying? Or visibiliy? I would assume that it's easier to see a red airplane than a white airplane in the clouds.

Why do most airlines paint their planes white? Or at least 90% white with a logo or stripe.

On the other hand UPS, DHL or the military has no problem with full color.

thx

Traditionally, airliners were painted mostly white because it was easier to keep them clean. White also reflects heat away from the skin of the airplane and they don't get as hot inside while sitting on the ramp.

Over the last few years, Several airlines have painted their airplanes in brighter colors. Most of United's airplanes have a dark blue fuselage with gray wings, Northwest has several specially painted birds, including one called "Shamu" that is painted black and white like an orca (killer whale.) I believe Southwest Airlines airplanes are all painted in different colors too.

Most military aircraft are painted in stealth or camouflage colors to make it harder for the enemy to see them.

The army never paints their aircraft white, and many independent commercial aircraft companies paint their aircraft a different color. Lufthansa uses some blue, Lot does too, United is grey, etc. Probably the main reason why aircraft are white is because they don't need camoflauge when they're civilian aircraft.

To prevent excess heat build up was the traditional reason. Most airports have cooling air available at every gate so it isn't as hard to keep cool. If you have ever been to Alaska you would notice most of the planes there are not white. It is easier to find them in the snow.
