What are the benefits of having houseplants in a room?

For instance, do they purify the air at all? or do they just look nice? there is definitely something really nice-looking about a plant, but i really don't know what it is. definitely makes a room look nicer, but does it do anything else?

Yes, they do purify the air, especiallly spider plants:

"Spider plants are not only attractive to look at, but they are very good for our environment, too. Known as air cleaners, spider plants were identified by NASA in the late 1980s as one of the plants that help to purify the air by removing dangerous toxins (formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, benzene, and others)"

They do help to clean the air and add a calming influence as well as being another living thing sharing your environment.

    1- they look nice

2- they are beneficial during day and harmful during night, coz they breathe Co2 during day and breathe out O2, and vice versa during night
