Is an orca a dolphin or a whale, and why?

And don't say it's a whale because it's big!

The orca or killer whale is a toothed whale that is an efficient predator, even attacking huge young blue whales. Their only enemy is human beings. Orcas live in small, close-knit, life-long pods and have 1 blowhole. The killer whale belongs to the family of dolphins and is the biggest dolphin. It is sometimes called the "wolf of the sea" because its behavior is similar to that of wolves.

The orca is both a whale and a dolphin.

The basic definition of whale is a member of the order cetacea that is over 16 feet long at maturity.

Other small whales that belong to the dolphin (delphinidae) family are Pilot whales, Melon Headed whales and False Killer whales.

The orca is the largest of the dolphins at 24-30 feet long.

When you think of Shamu, you should think of a whale. A killer whale. However, orcas (their real name) only have that name because they were watched by sailors many years ago, and were believed to be 'whale killers'. Killer whales do eat differant members of the whale and dolphin family. But, orcas are in fact the largest dolphin member. You are both right, and you are both wrong. The term whale is used very loosely, and the term dolphin is too specific. They are all members of the cetacean family though, so in reality it doesn't matter what you call them. In the end it's just by size. Whales are the biggies, then the dolphins, and lastly the porpoises.

Orcas, killer whales are most specifically a porpoise. The main reason for being included in the porpoise group is the shape of its head. Dolphins have an extended "nose" and mouth, porpoises do not, the head follows a smooth curve down to its jaw.
