Are women who have abortions to save the planet selfish?
Toni Vernelli was one of two women recently featured in a London Daily Mail story about environmentalists who take their carbon footprint very, very seriously.
So seriously, in fact, that Vernelli aborted a pregnancy and, by age 27, had herself sterilized. Baby making, she says, is "selfish" and "all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet."
Because Toni and her husband, Ed, are childless and vegan, they say they can justify one long-haul airplane trip per year and still remain carbon neutral.
In my opinion, couples who choose abortion and sterilization may not save the planet, but they're saving the gene pool a mess of trouble by purging their own from the mix.
What say you?

Here's how the mental calculation goes: Let's see, if I abort my child, maybe I can travel first-class to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali.

Abortion issues aside, that woman is nuts. Did you hear her interview? Im all for population control, but one family going to this extreme doesnt even compensate for one family w/ 10 kids on welfare w/ an 87 yugo and sawed off exhaust. Happy medium people,. happy medium. if everyone would stop at 2 kids and just recycle a bigger change could be made. Also, she's helping w/ animal overpopulation, which is equally as devistating.

WOW! I hadn't heard this story before now. But somehow it doesn't shock me. While, I am pro choice, Toni Vernelli seems like and extremist to me. I mean if she had an abortion in the first months of pregnancy because she had a terminal illness and it might affect the child I wouldn't say that is selfish or extreme. But I think justifying a once a year jet trip and saying procreating is selfish, is absolutley absurd!!!!

Golly Bubba, you mean they got liberal democrats over there in England, who would have figured it. Naw, that is BIZAAR and most answers have already addressed the question.
The mind set as others have stated that if they went away it might have been better.. Where do they come up with hese people. At least they are leaving more steak and beenie weenies for us. It's good to know that the answers show a vast majority of sane folks. Take care.

Couples, and indeed single women, who choose to have an abortion are making a very difficult decision. I think that it is right for some people while not for others. I know that some men complain about their rights as the father but it is not their body and sometimes they just have to accept that the woman will choose.
It is a very personal decision to make and each case must be decided on its individual reasons.
I would never say it is totally wrong nor totally right.
I haven't ever had an abotion but I have known friends who have done so. I do not condemn them as it was the right thing for them at the time.

From an environmentalist standpoint, I can see why they did it but calling people who have babies selfish is just as bad as you saying it's a good thing they halted their gene pool.
Having children is a personal choice. And though I'm a big believer in limited the population pool by having less children, I can't condemn anyone who has 15 of their own. I may think it irresponsible though but everyone is entitled to their opinions.
And no, I don't think they are selfish. But I can easily see why one would think that for the same reason why I think people who have tons of kids are selfish and most don't think they are.
It's all a matter of opinions and points of view.

These are people who clearly come from the most shallow end of the gene pool. I'm glad they've chosen not to have children - mostly because they couldn't be trusted to raise them wisely. But she should have taken responsibility for the acts she'd already done - had the child and turned it over to a more responsible parent.
I'm definitely not one of those people who want to take 'choice' away from mothers. But I do believe women who are given 'choices' should make more responsible ones than this woman did. Her poor decision making, combined with the absurd posturing, make her look very much like a little girl in dress up clothes pretending to be an adult.

Yes, they are selfish, stupid, and evil, but I could have saved a few words by just calling them liberals.
Look at the bright side. Every time a liberal kills her unborn baby it keeps ther from teaching another kid all that liberal garbage. In the long run, people who don't kill their babies will pass their values on to society and the scourge of this liberal death cult will fade away.

I don't see how ripping a fetus out of a uterus is going to save the planet. If women don't want to have children, there's this wonderful thing called not having sex. It works very well. If they choose not to go that route, there's all kinds of contraception options that you can employ before a pregnancy even occurs.

I myself do not believe in abortions unless it is a life or death situation. If she was so concerned about bringing children into this world, why didn't she be a woman and take the proper precatuions to prevent the pregnancy all together?
Grr. People like that just irritate me.

If the death of a human was committed to save the planet, then why didn't the same person using that excuse commit suicide and save us even more?
It sounds like they traded the life of their baby for a yearly plane trip....
