How warm is a polyester jacket?

I'm interested in buying a polyester jacket, and I was wondering how warm it is compared to

cotton jackets and feather insulated ones.

    Staying Warm.....Thermal comfort is achieved by balancing three factors:

    rate of heat production by your body

    insulation value of your clothing

    environmental temperature

    Of those three‚ it’s easiest to alter the insulation value of your clothing. To do this we need to understand how‚ exactly‚ insulations work.

    Insulations work in two ways: first‚ by trapping air. The more air trapped‚ the more efficient the insulation. Second‚‚ by reflecting back the body’s radiant heat.

    Cotton will not trap heat. That is why cotton is the choice of summer clothing. It breathes, aka lets the cold in and the warmth of your body out. Burrr!

    Feathers are great insulators only bulky and difficult to clean, aka down jackets.

    Thinsulate fibers, however, provides 1.5 times more heat than down, is breathable and can be machine washed or dry-cleaned. Further, Thinsulate fibers are about ten times smaller than the fibers of most other synthetic insulations‚ which means they’re much more efficient at trapping air…and more effective at keeping you warm. It also means it can pack more fibers into the same space‚ where they can reflect back more of the body’s radiant heat.

    The fibers in polyester are much bulkier, and not nearly as efficient at trapping air or reflecting back body heat.

    There is a reason "real" outdoor jackets are made of Thinsulate and not just polyester. They simply do not work, unless your version of keeping warm is a mild Fall day.

    I see the jacket you picked out is very pretty, thus the draw to buy it. But it is not very pretty to pay a pretty penny for something that doesn't work. Check out other stores for attractive, and FUNCTIONAL, jackets.

    Because, frankly, in the end you'll not end of looking good, just like a fool to pay good money for superficial junk. In this instance, you are paying a great deal of money for a name brand. Go to Target or Walmart for jackets made of the same material, just less money as they are not flashy name brands.

    Goosedown and Thinsulate are the warmest. But with goosedown, the outer fabric has to be very waterproof and not just water resistant. L. L. Bean, Land's End, and North Face make great jackets. Good luck!! : }

We all wanted to be wrapped in the heavenly warmth of down, but it was out of Dad's price range. Instead we layered. We layered until we could not bend our arms or legs. And then we whined. Luckily, synthetic technology has gotten a lot more sophisticated and now there are numerous manmade materials that mimic down without the hefty price tag. Synthetic insulation is essentially polyester threading that is molded into long single threads or short staples to mimic lofty down clusters. Thinner and lighter threads fill voids and trap warm air more effectively, while thicker strands sustain the loft and durability.
