Why do cons claim to be for individual rights?

when so many of their beliefs are collectivist in nature?

The con's three favorite organizations are highly collectivist in nature: the military, the church, and the nation state. In all of these, you are expected to follow/believe what you are told. Individual dissent is discouraged (even within the nation state. We all know how quick cons are to use the term treason). The group is held to be more important then the individual.

Besides these three, there is also this thing called "traditional values." They believe in using the government to restrict social decisions based on their conservative interpretation of christianity. Today's it's opposition to the right of gay marriage, abortion, and the right to die (for the terminally ill). In the past it was opposition to birth control pills, in-vitro fertilization, interracial marriage, women's rights, and abolition of slavery.

Update:

The one thing cons seem to be "individualists" on is on economic matters. They believe in law of the jungle (big fish eat smaller fish) economics, to each his own. They don't want their tax money spend helping their fellow citizens. Their support for "individual economic rights" means workers have the freedom to be abused, consumers scammed, citizen cheated, and the environment polluted.

Update 2:

westhill,

True. Alot of people just hear the terms "individual rights" and "free enterprise" and support it without completely understanding what it means.

It is liberals who are for individual rights where it counts: social issues. Cons, on the other hand, are collectivist on social issues, prefering to use the government to enforce their religious morals on everybody else.

On economic issues, liberals are collectivist in comparison to cons. As a liberal I think we should all pitch in and make government take care of its citizens and help them work their way up. Only then can the fool potential of its citizens be realized.

You are assuming to be a 'con' we have to be a follower of the present adm, that has alot more mix thrown in it than previous Rep. Presidents.

Do you think cons are for the North American Union, or throwing Border Agents in prison, having the big corps get richer by out-sourcing jobs and tax cuts? Not me.

What happened to a basic govt of,by & for the PEOPLE? Whatever that is, that's what was intended for this country. Nor do 'cons' want our country put in jeopardy by an Imperialistic affront.

Can we say " Propaganda"? Its the oldest trick in the book.

And that goes for ALL points of view, not just the cons.

As far as your examples, they are restrictive, yes, but not illegal... well, assisted suicide, but thats different. Certain states allow gay unions. Abortion is restricted to the 3rd trimester ( Funny thing is, most abortions are performed in the 1st trimester, rarley in the 2nd)

Our leaders are leaders because we vote. ( I wonder if thats the case anymore) And with so many religious cooks in the world, who vote, what better way to get a vote than to use belief oriented mind control. Military, religion.... weak minded people.

"Individual rights" sells, it gets votes. It's all a matter of public relations. Most people do not examine what's behind the slogans.
