I stayed at Cat's Hostel (http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/hotel/-P167412.html... http://www.catshostel.com). Beautiful interior courtyard, reasonably clean rooms and bathrooms. Starts at 18 euros a night. There are a few double with their own baths, but they tend to get snatched up quickly.

Okay, for starters, "cheap" and "Western Europe" don't even belong in the same paragraph anymore! But here's a nice, clean, lower priced, basic place Almost IN the Plaza Mayor.
