Well, It's not so hard to get confused, we all do sometimes, But don't forget that God is not the author of confusion, so when we get frantic, we need to be aware of just who it is that's trying to get us in such a state.
For Me, since I learned to try looking around the corner, to see what the hidden "good" is, I've been amazed at how the Lord really DOES have my best interest in mind EVERY TIME!
Romans 8:28 is a key verse to knowing where I stand. It says "all" things are working for my good "A-L-L!" (because I sure DO love Him) When I learn to let go of the "frantic" that I feel and look for the "OK, Lord, where IS the good in this one?" That's when the "trusting" you're talking about actually kicks in.
I'm not a Catholic, but that doesn't matter a bit. The Bible reads the same, no matter who you are.
Dwight L. Moody, a successful -though UN-educated (like Peter and John, Acts 4:13) evangelist said, "There are two ways you can get to heaven. First Class, and second class!"
Second class says, " What time I am afraid I will trust in thee." (Psalm 56:3) and first class says, "I will trust and not be afraid!" Ha! (Psalm 56:4) I found 55 verses on trusting the Lord in the Psalms alone.
I like "Trust in the Lord with ALL thy heart, and lean not to thine own understanding, in all thy ways aknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths." (Proverb 3:5)
Could I ask you a question, Do you know where faith comes from? (Romans 10:17) Could it be that you reach a crisis and then you wonder if you need to have more faith because you were not faithful enough to study His words in times of "peace"? I don't want to come over self-righteously or like "what's wrong with you?" That wouldn't help a bit! But see, if you would do more to familiarise yourself with the Bible, then you could be the one who's guiding others to its peace and trust, don't you think?
You certainly do NOT sound stupid and it's no waste of time. There is a very good site called "bible gateway" where you can look up ANY word in the Bible YOURSELF and it's free and they have over 50 different languages and translations. Try it!
Me I also sit down (or stand up) and sing praises to Him, like David did, and that helps me a lot to trust Him.
I hope that this is a help and I will pray you can trust Him more, and like the little girl prayed, "And please take good care of Yourself, dear Lord, or else we'd all be sunk!"
edit: Truth seeker: don't be so cock-sure that a priest "cannot forgive sins". Jesus says in John, to his disciples that immeadiately after they received the Holy Spirit they COULD forgive sins. (John 20:22,23) So if the priest is filled with the Holy Spirit he can. Just as you and I also can, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Who told you he CAN'T? Not the Bible. (I am not a Catholic!) As a matter of fact He even says if you DON'T forgive 'em their tresspasses, God won't forgive you either, (Matthew 6:15) so it behooves us all to be doin' a heep o' forgivin', don't you think. The tragic side of all this is that we have such a wonderful ability and don't use it every day.
