When people talk about racism why do they only bring up southern states?

For example, the KKK was started in Tennessee and later was the dominant party in Indiana. And South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union and said it was because they wanted slavery. And the state of New York had slavery too.
Then other states like Washington and Ohio had laws preventing black people from entering the state altogether.
There are countless other examples, but these are probably the most famous.
