When people talk about racism why do they only bring up southern states?

I think I may be about to burst the bubble of some people.

I never realized that there was the least difference between me and the black kids in school until 5th grade. The only reason I even realized it then was because someone was blaming a white kid for doing something to someone else because he was black.
Someone drew grafiti on the shed behind the school calling a black student a name and then signed it with the name of a white student. Now, it was quite obvious that the student whose name was written there didn't really do it, since no one signs their own name to grafiti on school grounds, but it was being treated as a case of racism.

Southern states are some of the most integrated communities in the nation. I have black neighbors, white neighbors and hispanic neighbors all in the same cul-de-sac with me.
Meanwhile, you have whole towns in places like Illinois that are single race. You don't find things like that around here.

There was a serious problem with racism in the past, but it's something that is fading into our past. Yes, there are still many around here that have that hatred within them, but it's not something that me or anyone else I know (again, all South Carolinians) would put up with.

Because they're ignorant. I'm from Alabama, black, whites, Mexicans, and Asians all get along here just fine. Racism mostly comes from older generations, younger people don't care about race. People that aren't from the south generally have a distorted view of the south, probably because they've never been here and they believe everything they hear on TV.
