What is Genocide by Assimilation?

I have heard that it is happening in Tibet and to the Native American Tribes of the United States and Candida. Could it also be happening to the white people of Europe, North America and Australia?

The term used by the United Nations (for instance in the draft of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 1994) is Cultural Genocide. The 7th article of the said draft (the word "cultural" was dropped in the final text - otherwise the article was adopted without changes):

Indigenous peoples have the collective and individual right not to be subjected to ethnocide and cultural genocide, including prevention of and redress for:
(a) Any action which has the aim or effect of depriving them of their integrity as distinct peoples, or of their cultural values or ethnic identities;
(b) Any action which has the aim or effect of dispossessing them of their lands, territories or resources;
(c) Any form of population transfer which has the aim or effect of violating or undermining any of their rights;
(d) Any form of assimilation or integration by other cultures or ways of life imposed on them by legislative, administrative or other measures;
(e) Any form of propaganda directed against them.

This is of course a delicate subject, since very many peoples and governments have committed some sort of cultural genocide, not only the Chinese (not only towards the Tibetans, but also other minorities like Uighurs and Mongolians of Inner Mongolia) and Americans, but also a long list of European countries (not only the colonial powers), as well as governments in almost every corner of the world. Cultural genocide has been justified by supremacist (our culture has the right to dominate because it is "better") or social darwinian (our culture has the right to dominate because it is stronger) arguments, but is of course normally not openly admitted at all.


And no, it is extremely improbable this would happen to the white peoples of Europe, North America and Australia in the foreseeable future, if you mean by force of some outside immigration (Muslims, Africans, Chinese, Martians, whatever). There are, however, numerous examples of smaller white minorities who have been more or less extinguished through some sort of cultural genocide during history, others who have felt justifiably threatened, and yet others who were almost completely assimilated but later came back through nationalistic struggle. Examples are Sami in Scandinavia, Roma and Sinti (Gypsy) all over Europe, Slavonic minorities in Poland, Slovakia and the Balkans, East German minorities, Jews in the 19th and early 20th century (for instance in imperial Austria-Hungary), celtic peoples of Great Britain and France, Basque, and so on, and so forth.

I believe genocide by assimilation is talking about a race of native people loosing their racial purity to the point they are no longer a distinguishable group. This often happens when people are invaded by another race and begin to interbreed with the invaders. Over time the characteristics that were once distinguishing of that race become so diluted they can no longer be seen. The culture and traditions of the people are often lost along the way as well. The race is not killed off by killing everyone of that race but by assimilation into the invading society. This is hurried along when things like climate controlled houses and food shipped in from other regions and countries removes the factors that once made one race most suitable for the environment of a region.
I never thought of it as genocide but eventually all races/colors of people will interbreed and we will all be some shade of tan without dark skin blacks or pale white skinned people. I guess I do not think of it as genocide because I see that as something negative but all of us being a similar color would most likely be a positive thing. The fewer obvious physical differences the better. It would eliminate racism and I see that as a positive thing. It could also be part of better adapting to survive with more intense UV rays and other climate changes that may occur.

I do not think you really understand the word "assimilation". It is when a group or a family moves or relocates to another state, country, or even town, they take up the holidays, habits, dress, perhaps even the church affiliation, to blend in into the community as one of them. This happens here in America with a lot of folks that came from war-torn countries and wanted to start over here. The first thing was language learning, then the same schooling, teachers, doctors, etc. You brought homes, clothing, etc. that your neighbors did---even so, many immigrants left behind their religious tenets to get a job here, or be able to go to well-respected school.

With the First Americans, some in the South were forced to convert to Christianity and some children were taken away from their families and put into Christian boarding schools, to the shame of this gov't, as even Jackson, defying a Supreme Court Order to not force the Cherokee and other tribes from GA and surrounding areas to relocate to OK---he made thousands leave behind their homes, businesses, farms, etc. and walk to OK. Over 500 tribes died from the invasion of many cultures into this land. Tibet is another story, but one over religious rights to choose a lama originally, now with the railroad going from China to Tibet, more people are moving from Tibet to mainland China. It can work both ways, not always bad.

However, in countries where Christianity had political clout, laws were passed to force natives and immigrants not Christian to submit to the crown. The same is happening today with Islam. Since Islam is a missionary religion, like Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity, they, when in the majority, force Islamic law on the people whether or not they wanted to be Islamic or not and those that do not agree either must flee or subject themselves to the laws placed on them as "nonbelievers" and live a very controlled existence under Islamic law where freedom of religion and freedom of will and women's rights are upheld. Read the invasion of Spain, India, North Africa, Sudan, Indonesia (the majority of the billion Muslims live today) and other islands and countries that are under Islamic law.

Just check on what happened to Somalia and the problems countries are having with the pirates. What we need is less missionaries tooting their own political agenda under the disguise of a religion so that people can choose on their own how they want to eat, pray and live in a free society. Only then will all peoples will be able to do what is righteous for themselves and the common man world-wide. See the God-Fearers that were around since Noah, around the globe. The laws are in every great religion and should be the common ground we all can honor without infringing on the rights of others. First of all Assimilation is NOT the same as Genocide....And neither are what happened to Native Americans....And no it's not the same as what is happening to "whites"...

Acculturation is the biggest crime ever committed against Native Americans. Genocide is horrible, but its effect is quick death. Assimilation is cruel, creating prejudice and poverty in extreme proportions. The dead man knows no prejudice, no poverty. And the assimilated man may still hold onto his traditions, his culture, even if in the face of overwhelming adversity. But, the acculturated man is lost, having no tradition, no culture, and yet in many cases still experiences prejudice and poverty. He becomes totally lost.
