If you can't talk to friends or family, then maybe see a professional. If you have health insurance, get some names from them. If not, then there should be services in your community to help, possibly even the unemployment office? Not sure, but look in the phone book. Sometimes a little guidance is all we need.
Another thing you can do is write out your strengths & weaknesses (be honest, but not critical) and your interests. See what types of jobs use your strengths and downplay your weaknesses while keeping your interest. You can try several things. Maybe contact someone who does that job and see if you can shadow them for a day.
As far as the drinking, I do wish you luck on that. Some people can stop by willpower and some people do need support, such as AA. You're not weak if you need AA. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's intelligent.
As far as the sleep, if a doctor can't, or for some reason won't, prescribe anything for you, here are a few things to try:
don't drink caffiene in the afternoon
don't exercise right before bed
do take a hot bath if you have a tub
do listen to relaxing/ calming music
some teas (& frangrances), such as chamomile, lavendar, and sleepytime (brand) are relaxing
sometimes I find that writing out the things I need to do and making a plan for the next day helps me fall asleep because then I don't think about it anymore
do keep a journal or do freewrites if you are dealing with bigger issues
eat healthy & excersize
some foods, such as turkey, fish (esp. salmon), and flax seeds have naturally occuring chemicals to fight against depression (and triptophan in turkey also makes people tired)
Best of luck to you!
Life. I've been in the dumps before too. :)
