  • Should the electoral college be done away with?

Best answer: It never should have been created in the first place. No system is perfect, but at least the people would be heard. For those who defend it, I would like to point out that eliminating the electoral college would not effect the checks and balances in the government.

(In close elections, the candidate with the most votes often only gets a plurality of the vote -- e.g., 1960, 1968, 1992, and 1996.) But in nine of the last fifteen elections, the winning candidate got a majority of the popular vote and won the electoral votes, four times the winning candidate got a plurality of the popular vote, and twice (2000 and Trump) the winning candidate actually got fewer popular votes than his opponent.

Didn't they notice that the Constitution leaves the method of selecting electors up to the legislatures of each state? There was much debate about how the president should be elected. But whether the president was to be selected by Congress or the Electoral College, it was always clear that the selection would be by the STATES, based on the number of senators and representatives of each state. The Constitution allowed each STATE to determine how to select its electors. To change that to an allocation based on popular vote is tantamount to gutting one of the fundamental 'states rights' established by the Founding Fathers.

Voting Labour might not improve their quality of life but they have so much money that an extra 5p tax wouldn’t actually make a huge difference and they can help out people. But why would somebody on an income of around £80,000 to £100,000 vote labour. Yes, they’re certainly not poor but when you take into account mortgages, perhaps school fees, other expenses. An increase in tax would reduce their quality of life. Why would they vote labour

Best answer: The reason the system is used is because it spreads the vote out across the whole country so that small states have their fair share in deciding who would be President. I don't remember the specific numbers but California had something like a 65% voters who voted for Hillary. That was something in the neighborhood of 9 million votes. California is a Very Liberal State and let's say next election 85% vote for the Liberal candidate then that means who ever Californians want, they get and screw the 40+ other States all across the country who voted for the opponent. There's also the controversial fact that there were illegal aliens allowed to vote but who knows how many?.
