Like my skin is pretty white, but I have black hair and brown eyes. ANd in summer time I tan which makes me look Latino. Idk who my real parents are. Am I white? I always considered myself to be just White but some people are like you have to have blond hair, brown hair, blue eyes, green eyes, or some combination or one of those traits. Others say they think they can tell one of my parents/ancestors were probably Latino, or maybe even Italian or Greek or something. Are Greeks and Italians White?

If it's about color, then wouldn't that mean Indian people are the same race as black people? If it's about culture, then Arabs shouldn't be considered Caucasian?

Best answer: Humans, Homo sapiens, evolved in Africa from Homo heidelbergensis about 250,000 years ago. We had dark skin. We also had alleles for paler skin. Melanin in dark skin prevents sunburn and skin cancers so dark skin is beneficial near the equator.

Sunlight on the skin produces Vitamin D. Melanin slows the production of Vitamin D but with strong sunlight we get sufficient. As humans moved away from the equator, the sun was lower in the sky and weaker so less vitamin D was produced. At the same time, with the weaker sun, less melanin was required in the skin so the allele for paler skin kicked in and people with paler skin were able to get sufficient vitamin D without increasing the risk of sunburn.

Humans moved out of Africa about 100,000 years ago. One route they took was along the southern coast of Asia reaching Australia about 60,000 years ago. These people, being still in the tropics, retained the darker skin.

As humans moved into northern Asia and then into Europe about 50,000 years ago, the move into higher latitudes saw paler skin becoming dominant. You can see the same in southern Africa where the Bushmen have much paler skin than central Africans. (The darker skinned people in South Africa like the Zulu and the Xhosa moved there from the north quite recently.)

We are all the same species and the same race. Skin colour variation is a mainly latitudinal thing and the result of evolution. You can see it on this map https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_skin_color#/media/File:Unlabeled_Renatto_Luschan_Skin_color_map.svg
