Best answer: It sounds like your sister may be doing something for a group like 4H. They help teach kids about caring for livestock (farm animals). While this is generally a good thing, I do not like their treatment and "care" of rabbits. They see them as either meat rabbits or just for amateur show. They promote antiquated care of rabbits. I imagine the reason your parents have agreed is because they see this as an "educational opportunity." It was your parents decision to agree -- not your sister's. So why be upset with your sister?

The care of rabbits as indoor household pets, however, is totally different and is geared to the longevity and health of the rabbits. The House Rabbit Society has been instrumental in helping educate people about rabbits as family pets (as opposed to livestock).

Perhaps, for your part, you can begin to do research about rabbits as household pets and learn all you can about keeping rabbits this way. A single rabbit can be happily kept indoors with appropriate exercise and attention. A single rabbit should never be housed outdoors alone. The trick is that rabbits cannot be kept in pairs *unless* both rabbits have been fixed and then bonded. 4H typically does not allow their show rabbits to be fixed. This is sad -- especially for female rabbits since those left intact will often have half the lifespan due to the high incidence of cancer in females not fixed before age 5.

Perhaps, once you do your research, you could propose getting an indoor, already fixed rabbit (from a rabbit rescue -- they come already fixed) as an education in contrasting care. The following website (mine, though it includes the latest in house rabbit care from the House Rabbit Society and others) will get you started. Housing rabbits indoors is really the way people care for rabbits nowadays. The outside, hutch situation is old-fashioned, and can even be cruel if following the old recommendations for livestock care.

Oh, and since your sister is looking at hutches, be sure to take a peek at this (note that the woman speaking is a PhD animal behaviorist :

I could tell my pet bunny was scared of it because of how he was distancing himself away from it and today when I went to go get my pet bunny from outside I saw him lying beside the wild bunny. They were just laying beside each other relaxing. My family and I joke that my pet bunny has a girlfriend, but I dont know. Better safe than sorry.

Was wondering, I really want a pet friend and as a minor I know I obviously have to ask my parents, but first i want to come up with a pet. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment with a balcony. My mom doesn't like dogs or cats or rodents (rodents especially) my dad likes larger dogs (not suitable for our apartment) and he doesn't like cats. I love cats, dogs, bunnies, hamsters, cute furry animals like that. I'm not a huge fan of reptiles... I go to school and come back at about 4, my mom comes at 6, and my dad comes at different times according to his schedule usually after 5. We're home on the weekends my dad is home on Wednesday. So any suggestions for these circumstances?

Impact,,major. Imagine a spoiled brat kid on steroids with unlimited energy and subject to temper tantrums.
He was loving liked to cuddle, he and the dog would chase each other through the house, get all lovey dovey while stealing the car keys, Fun, yes, but more than a hand full. Smart, very smart.
My best tip for future monkey owners,,,"DONT EVER BE ONE".Few peopleeven have the patience to keep a monkey. They are NOT going to be what you expect, and living 20 plus years, kiss vacations good by, they are a full time job(as in work) Cannot be left alone more than a few hours. We got very lucky, our pet was raised by a Phd in primatology and stayed with its mom/dad until it was properly independent and had a good psychological profile. the only one like him ever saw.Seen spider, other capuchin, vervet, howler, squirrel, and all were either mental or emotional basket cases being removed from the wild, improperly removed from family etc.and literally cruel for them.
NO,MONKEYS DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS. they belong in the wild where they live.
No, as much as I would love the little $hits, I will never keep another.
From the horses mouth on this one. You want to see monkeys,,go to the zoos.
PS: Chico's cold cost over a thousand dollars, 2days at hotels, and 2 1/2 hour drive to a qualified exotic animal vet, figure 4 times that today, and monkeys, IF you can find them run 5 to 6 grand today. They are illegal in north America now and I say good riddance. Chico died prematurely at 13 years old from a lung infection Our sad day.
PPS: They can bite and draw blood, they can scratch like a cat, and do have the strength to pull an ear off your head with one hand. They rake you with their tail, it can cause blindness.

Not everybody is afraid of spiders, can't hurt to share your home with them, they are great pest bug exterminators.
