  • Can you get any device that can increase your internet speed?

Best answer: First, speed is normally measured in Mbps (Megabits/second) not mps (Metres/second). Also whereas M stands for Mega, m also refers to milli as in ms meaning millisecond. 1 Mbps = 1,000,000,000 mbps - a ration of one billion to 1.

First, check what speed you get using Ethernet instead of WiFi. If the Ethernet speed is much faster, then the problem is with WiFi, which is purely an interface between your router and your laptop.

The next thing is to understand what sort of ISP connection you have. Cable - using a coaxial feed and possibly carrying TV as well as Internet; ADSL - using a normal phone line with phone and Internet sharing the same line; or Satellite.

Satellite will normally be fairly slow unless you have a really expensive contract.

ADSL can be slow if you are a long way from the local telephone exchange. 3 Mbps is about what you might expect with phone lines that are around 2 to 3 miles in length from the exchange to your house.

If it is ADSL, then it can suffer if you have a number of extension phone sockets around the house, and if you have any phone type devices (including answer phones and FAX machines and certain types of alarm systems) that are connected to the line without a suitable filter.

Check with the ISP as to what speed you should be getting.

There used to be a few proxy sites that offered speed improvement facilities for general browsing, although I don't know if they still exist. Basically, your computer would connect to one of these sites and compression software installed in your computer and also in the server at the site meant that data across you ISP link was compressed and consequently transferred fewer bytes when a text type file was being transferred. With a normal web page, the compression might achieve a 50% reduction in the size of the page as it came across your ISP connection meaning your 3 Mbps would effectively be 6 Mbps. Unfortunately, even if these sites still exist, they tend to work only with text type files. Music (mp3), photos (jpg) and video (mp4, mpg, mov, etc) and already compressed, and further compression does not work.

These sites were popular when Internet connections were all dial-up at 56 kbps (0.056 Mbps), but are generally not used with modern ISP connections.

If your ISP or another one in the area cannot offer better speeds, then the other alternative is probably to look for a 4G cellular Internet connection. However, this will possibly not be available where you live, and may be prohibitively expensive depending on what cellular contracts are available.

The final solution, if there is something that is line of sight from you and within about 10 miles, would be to see if you can get a point to point microwave link set up. Instead of the ISP service terminating at your house, it would go to some other location and then use the microwave link to make the jump to your location. There might be local licensing considerations involved, and you would have to find a suitable remote site where the ISP connection could be interfaced with a microwave transceiver.

You might be lucky and find that Ethernet is giving you perhaps 20 Mbps, in which case, you simply need to sort out the problem with the WiFi network.

    Good luck.

  • Why do people use the 'Clone stamp' tool on Photoshop to take one part of an image and transfer it to another?

You could easily select the whole image (cntrl-a) then copy it (cntrl-c) then select the who;e thing as an image frm the clipboard. Then copy the bit that you want and transfer it to the original original image. This is a non destructive way of doing it and will not deteriorate the image like the clone stamp.
