  • Why has no car manufacturer built a modern car with a carburetor engine? (Question continues below)?

Best answer: Emmissions regulations forced the developement of everything under the hood. Car makers would just build carburetors and simple cars if they could. The Lada in Russia was carb until 1996, cheap car trying to stay cheap. The VW bug was built from 1938 to 2003 but outlawed by emmission laws in many countries in the 1970's. I think it used the carb the whole time.

I see many people calling the carb ineffecient here. A good carb design with a good mechanic on a well designed car will not get better mileage if converted to fuel injection. There is much more going on. The computer and all it's gear got added to the carb to make the catalyst converter work. The mechanical carb parts were not fast enough or durable enough, so evolution replaced them with injection. Many advancements have been made for improved combustion and emmissions on the modern car. Only in the later half of compuer's life has performance come from it.

  • Why did my car hydroplane?

I made a left turn and wasn't going all that fast and nearly hit the car to the right of me. My tires are good. It rained a little bit this morning but still no reason it should have done that. I am extremely angry right now!

Mileage getting poorer and poorer. Now the car failed to start suddenly even though it was OK 5 min ago. What are the most probably causes? I will not replace catalytic converter (too expensive, not worth the car value). O2 sensors? (I have not tried). The battery terminal is dirty (yes, I will clean that to see... show more

Best answer: the bearings have a plating. if you hear grinding, that plating has bean compromised, replace bearing, pack w wheel bearing grease. generally the matted surface (hub race) will have also taken a hit. so to do this right, should replace the hub too. but i'd just replace the bearing itself and likely it will last for quit some time. unless you can visually detect scoring of race. if it looks good, running your finger nail in the race, if you can, feeling ridges, can tell you what your eyes cant see. should be smooth surface. ridges, your done. need to replace hub as well. the bearing and hub in that instance will go away quickly.
    FYI,
very important packing a bearing that you don't leave trapped air in it. air will expand faster than grease and force the grease out of the bearing. issue will repeat itself. you can take the bearing to any auto shop and they will pack it for you if needed.
DO NOT use bicycle bearing oil. what ever that is. never heard of that. oil will run away from heat unless it's under pressure. wheel bearing grease is a must.

    good luck.

Best answer: What drives the alternator is a V belt. It is too loose. So it squeals like your tires make when they slip on the pavement...except your belt is slipping in the pulleys. The adjustment is on the alternator bracket. It has a big oval slot. You loosen the bolt that is in that slot, and then take a stick like a 2x4 and jamb it down in between the alternator pulley and some other part of the engine and use the wood like leverage to make the belt tighter and then tighten the bolt. Take out 2x4 and start again. If noise is still there then you did not move the alternator. Make sure it moves. and do the wood thing again. You will figure it out.
