I've been learning fundamentals, drawing from life, drawing every day etc. I'm a long way from having amazing artwork that is realistic, and have been struggling to nail proportions. So I'm wondering if there is a point where after hours and hours of drawing where it all clicks and makes sense. I've looked at art classes and getting a tutor, and sadly I can get neither just now. Also any tips or drawing exercises that helped you or people you know in practising art and making you a better artist would be really appreciated. :)

How much do I charge for this custom pencil drawing? (Photo attached)?

I recently turned 18, and I have been drawing for a little over two years. The piece is a 16x20, and I have been working on it all summer. I would say I've spent over 50 hours on it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you!

Best answer: If you want to use bursts without flash, depending on ambient light only, you will need a very high ISO, which may result in noisy images. Be sure to turn on the Noise Reduction Feature. From your description I am reading you want to get the entire arc of the flower toss, hence the burst. These images may well look like crapola due to the noise. Be sure to turn on Noise Reduction. Your settings will depend on the ambient light levels, there is no way I can advise you, except to say keep the shutter speed as high as you can to avoid shake and movement blur. I assume you will then composite the images to show the entire arc. Lots of work there.

An alternative is that you use a flash. If you time it right ( use second curtain setting) you use a longer shutter speed, and the flash goes off when the flowers are at the top of the arc. What you get is the flowers blurring on the way up to the top of the arc, and down into the crowd of women fighting over the flowers. The flowers would be frozen by the flash at the top of the arc. This requires perfect timing on your part. Hopefully the bride will be frozen in a pleasing position when the flash goes off. Ask her to look at you and freeze as she tosses the flowers. Brace yourself (or use a tripod) to avoid camera shake.

Or you stay safe: Use the flash with 1/250 shutter speed, watch her carefully, and shoot when you see her let go of the flowers. Everything will be frozen, but the bride will be in focus (extremely important) the flowers will be on the way up and the shot will be clean. Depending on how fast the flash recharges you may be able to get two shots. Set to burst but shoot as if you are only doing the one shot.

If you have time, get some flowers and a friend to help and PRACTICE. I'd make time for that.

    Good luck.

As of recent, my interests have set its sight in the art of Computer/3D Animation. Unable to take part in animation school this year, I have resorted to self-teaching myself until the opportunity arises once more. I'm taking a rather serious approach to this as well. For example, there are those who find themselves okay with a second or third place trophy. I, on the other hand, aim for that first place position. My passion alone is currently the only thing pushing me towards my goal; to become the most superb computer animator out there. So I ask, are there any 3D, perhaps even traditional animators who can share this insight on what it takes and perhaps even some recommendations on books, online courses, and other activities that can shape me in my venture to become a remarkable animator!

  • Can I retake my license photo?

The problem with my license photo is that I wasn t looking at the camera and I also showed some teeth (because when people say smile, my first instinct is to show teeth). I heard we aren t supposed to show teeth in official document photos but the lady taking the photo didn t say anything about it.

What are the strong points in my friends art?

Best answer: First impression...love it; the central theme is one of hopelessness. And that comes through big time.

But on second impression it appears the figure was cut and paste. For example, the hands look like they were made from one image but it was reversed to make the second hand. Ditto the sleeves.
