Me and my friend are wanting to challenge ourselves. We regularly go into the woods, light a campfire and chill there, or else hike 5 miles into the hills just to see if we can cope. We've got a plan for next spring/summer holidays to go on a nomadic camping trip, during which we spend 2 days heading due north, and 2 days back south. We won't be bringing a tent or sleeping bags, so we'll be making or finding shelter wherever we can, and we'll be taking minimal food (we can't cover much distance if we spend the whole time hunting and fishing). The current equipment list is this: Lighter and matches each Paper for tinder Rope/string Empty metal water container Swiss army knife (Victorinox Huntsman) Axe/Bow saw (undecided) Flashlights Food Recurve hunting bow (in case food gets lost or otherwise inedible) Is there anything else that needs considered? The area north of us is hills and coniferous woodland with plenty of rivers.

  • Is this enough to camp in 30 degree weather?

I have a sleeping bag rated for 45 degrees. If I added 1-2 wool blankets inside, would that be enough to stay warm overnight? Thanks!

The problem is the first night here temperatures fell down to 19 degrees, we had to get out of the tent and sleep in the car. Nearest Wal-Mart or Target is approximately 150 miles away, I am considering driving the 20 miles to shop see what they have even though I know it will be pricey.

I'll be taking pictures with it too probably do that won't help the battery. I have a separate solar powered charger though. But does anyone hiking use a cheap flip phone as am extra precaution? Because even if it's deactivated and your not paying for any minutes, it can still dial 911 Incase you get hurt and break your smartphone or its dead or you lose it. You could keep a small flip phone on your body easily, even sticking it in your boot. Has anyone used a phone like this while hiking as extra safety Thanks!

Go to your local Home Medical supply - they will rent all sorts of like oxygen tanks, wheel chairs, walkers etc and most sell CPAP machines and accessories. One of these accessories is a stretchy cloth that goes across the top of your head and under your chin to keep your mouth closed when using a CPAP. Not very expensive. Basically anything that looks like the old toothache cartoon and holds your mouth closed will do fine.

Best answer: Forty years ago, I did not have much money. I only had cheap gear. A tent with fiberglass poles and no waterproof fabric with a synthetic sleeping bag. I stayed at a campground near the Corn Palace at Mitchell, South Dakota. A very heavy rainstorm blasted throughout the night. My tent was flattened and soaked. I took my sleeping bag to a laundromat for drying. I took a shower in a flea-infested bathroom. I learned to buy high-quality gear, dramatically increasing the number of days that I go camping and providing me comfort on remote wilderness backpacking trips. Spending more than a thousand dollars on gear is worth the benefits: water filter, backpacking stove, lightweight tent, down sleeping bag, fleeces, quick-dry clothing, and a down jacket are all essential gear to be prepared for positive experiences in the backcountry.
