Clownfish are a salt-water fish, meaning that they need to be in saltwater (like the ocean) to live. Keeping saltwater fish as pets is harder than keeping freshwater fish. You need to track and adjust the amount of salt in the tank (salinity) as well as the temperature, pH balance, and how clean the water is.

I had one that actually draped his body over a cave as if he'd collapsed, that when I turned the light on got up and ended up being fine. So it sounds like things are normal. It is also common for some brightly colored specimens to dim their colors out when sleeping so they are less noticeable to predators. As long as they perk up during the day they should be just fine.

They don't really like fish in the first place and think that 5 gallons is a lot of space for just one fish, and that a bowl would suffice. My fish is perfectly healthy in a five gallon and does not show any signs that his tank needs an upgrade. How do I convince them otherwise?
