  • If your car was starting to have a lot of mechanical issues (see details), would you go for repairs or buy a new or good used car?

Have them evaluate the vehicle and give general opinion and some specific quotes on fixing some of the issues you listed. The AC could be one leaking hose, fix that and it might work. Or the compressor is bad, but you can find used compressors or aftermarket ones that may be ok price wise.
The bakes, loose caliper or pad?
Key points to evaluate first. Engine, running OK, burning oil. And headgasket leaks or major oil leaks.
Is Transmission OK, most likely needs drain and fill, then come back a week or two later for a drain and filter change. Body - are there rust hole and rust on the frame and under body that is not fixable.
Cooling system - corrosion and not working right. And last is timing belt, is probably past due.
If the core systems are OK, then you might be able work through the other issues like one every other month.

Or if you can afford it, upgrade to a used car in the $10,000 to $15,000 range and sell the CIVIC as is for what ever someone will pay. It depends on your budget. Going to a 2005 Civic, depending on the miles, may be a better car, but any car in that range will also need work from day 1.

Put $800 down on my car back in November and since then Ive bee paying $225 a month for it with a total of $3600 (and a few couple bucks) im still paying it off but since Ive had its been nothing but problems and Ive been paying for all repairs I signed my papers as is with no warranty. Ive replaced back brake pads which I asked them to look at for me and they said they did and they were fine but these pads were so worn out that one of my rims is a brownish color from the intense metal on metal and with that I had to replace a rotor. Ive put in a new battery when I first bought it and the "service engine soon" light has been on since I bought it and the car lot said not to worry about it. The car broke down in May b/c the AC compressor had started smoking and eventually locked up I paid for a refurbished one and also bought the frion. My car broke down again yesterday b/c the alternator went out I had to buy another one. Well the "serving engine soon" light turned off after that was replaced. The tires are bald and I had to put the spare on a week ago b/c wires were showing in one of my tires and the spare is a bad tire it only holds air for one day at a time which is costing me money b/c the gas station closes to my house charges for air It had 2300 miles when I paid for it and now has 2700. I still owe a little over $1800 on it and kelley blue book says its only worth $1400. Does the lemon law or anything related involve this type of situation

2005 chevy colorado z71 3.5 5 cyl. I replaced both front wheel bearings on my truck and STILL have a horrible vibration and sound in the front. I replaced both bearings, brake calipers, rotors and tie rods inner and out and STILL have this damn noise. The left Side i replaced twice because I though I got a bad wheel bearing out of box. I have this sound that amplifies when i left off the gas pedal and there is a noticeable vibration in my gas pedal as well as shaking in the front end. I've put the car up on a jack and check for play and the only play I have is at 3 and 6 and i just replaced the tie rods so now i'm guessing its and issue with rack and pinion? would that cause a noise like a wheel bearing?

  • Why do I have to turn my car key to 'ON' (click before start) to roll my power windows up or down?

Best answer: My old car had auxillary controlled (key turned back toward you) windows, my current car had auxillary controlled windows when I first bought it but it's not like that anymore
If that is true, the wiring for the AUX position has failed.

If you let your buddy do the work, he may be able to improve the looks substantially or it may end up looking like crap. Either way you will still be able to detect that it was dented and repaired.

What you should do depends on you and whats most important to you. Saving money or doing the job right.

When i excellerated the system picked back up and i was able to make it home with no problem. This morning I attempted to start the vehicle and it did not start, however all of the electrical turned on. i jumped the vehcile and everything seemed to be fine. i took it for a short drive up some hills and no light came on and all electrical work (music, windows,AC, phone charger) i figured i would give it a couple hours and see what happens after i drove it to see what happens with the battery. Does anybody have any suggestions?

My mechanic asked me to take it to the dealer because my coils were full of oil..so the coils have to be replaced and a cover gasket...grand total $1,100 to fix. Is it worth fixing or should I get a new car? This is a pretty penny to me.

  • Can you test cat convertor by removing o2 sensor for air flow and seeing if power is restored?

Best answer: Yes, you can remove the pre-cat O2 sensor and install a gauge or drive the car this way. It will be loud but there will be an improvement if the cat was plugged. The difference will be more noticeable with a severe restriction.

  • Should I leave on or take off overdrive when at low speeds?

Best answer: Turn it off at highway speed when towing or in the mountains and pushing the car in high gear too hard.

It isn't even engaged at low speeds, so turning it off is pointless.

  • Why would anyone even consider a used car?

Best answer: When you buy a new car, as soon as you drive it off the dealer's lot it becomes a used car. When the front wheels go "over the curb" you lose thousands of dollars. When the rear wheels follow, you double that loss

With a used car, someone else takes the major depreciation loss
