Best answer: All life carries some risk. There is a huge difference between managing risk and gambling.

Banks are not gambling when they loan money. They don't loan you money in the HOPE of charging you interest. They charge you interest. They cover their risk by charging people who are a greater risk a higher interest rate. And sometimes, loans are secured by property, which they take if you default on the loan. When they do sometimes take losses on loans, they more than make up for those losses on the interest they collect on good loans, and they mitigate some of those losses by taking and reselling the security for those securitized loans.

Trading in individual stocks is gambling. That is not investing. Investing carries risk, but investing is buying and holding, and in cases where dividends are paid, reinvesting those dividends. Trading is gambling. When you lose money trading individual stocks, you do not have the cushion against losses that a bank has.

A brief background, i m unemployed and taking care of my elderly mother. I was hoping to find some way of gaining income without having to leave her. I started doing research about stock and how they work, and I was starting to think I understood. Buy a share for a 1.00, wait till it goes up to 1.50, bang 50 cents out of thin air! Buy 100 shares, 50 bucks out of thin air! It all seemed so simple....too simple. I did research and learned there s a fee at both the time you buy, and the time you sell! Then there s commission, then taxes! If what I understand is correct, if I buy 100 shares at 1.00 and try to sell those shares at 1.50 i ll probably end up OWING money to someone! Is that correct, or am I missing something?

I have $500 in E*Trade and it is very difficult to find a stock to invest in with this little. It seems like the only things out there very high risk. For example I can only buy 24 shares of a $20 stock or 48 of a $10 stock that will be relatively low risk for me. I would have to wait potentially months just to make a few bucks of profit including the commission fees. Any stock lower than that will be considered a penny stock, which will be high risk and terrible for a beginner to do. Should I invest more into my budget before I trade or is there something out there I can try now.
