  • I don't understand the frets on a banjo!?

I'm learning to play the banjo and teaching myself with a beginner's book. I have absolutely no instrument experience whatsoever (not even with a guitar) and I'm confused about the frets. My book refers to "first fret," "second fret," and so on, but I'm not sure where to begin. I'm guessing a fret is the space between two metal bars on the neck? If so, do I just count down from the very top or start counting up from the skin of the banjo? What do the dots on my fretboard mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried googling and nothing answered my questions. Thanks in advance!

  • Filing Online 2011 Tax Help?

I filed my taxes last year by myself and it all worked out fine. Now my state (Utah) requires electronic filing and I've always used the booklets. I've browsed the IRS and the Utah government page and can't figure out how to file. They say to use some program to file but I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm filing an individual. Thanks in advance!

  • All of a sudden I can't connect to the Internet?

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop and it has worked fine for the first seven months I've had it. All of a sudden (yesterday), my computer stopped connecting to the wireless router. I assumed the problem was with the wireless, so I unplugged it all and such, but that wasn't the problem. In fact, I'm on my older laptop right now using the wireless connection. The connection shows up as being available, but when I click connect, it says it's unable to. I've tried the troubleshooting steps on the computer, but it says it can't identify the problem. What's the deal here and how can I fix it?!? This computer is worthless to me if I can't access the Internet. Thanks in advance. I choose best answer.

  • Thriller/Mystery set in the bayous of Louisiana?

I'm looking for a really good mystery/thriller genre novel set in the deep south. I'd like it to have a gothic kind of feel, but it doesn't have to have supernatural elements. I'm thinking a book that conjures visions similar to the movie Skeleton Key's setting, if that helps a little. I'm not big on harlequin romance type books, so I'm aware of the Bad Boys on the Bayou series and those similar already. Thanks!

  • Problems with recording from DVR to Magnavox DVD Recorder ZC320MW8?

I bought this DVD recorder from Walmart a few years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's defective or if I'm just not doing it right. I want to record programs from my DVR onto a DVD. It works just fine with TV shows because I record one episode at a time and most are shorter than 20 minutes. They play back fine, both with audio and picture.

However, when I try to record a movie from my DVR, it shows that everything went fine and that the recording time is an hour and a half or so, but when I try to play it back, it only plays fine for about 15-20 minutes. Then, it freezes and I can't move forward. I thought it might be the DVD, but I've tried recording dozens of different movies on different DVDs and it does the exact same thing. Can't be the whole box of DVDs? What's going on? Is this machine defective or should I be doing something else? Thanks for the help, I choose best answer!

  • Holes by Louis Sachar as a 6th grade read aloud?

I'm thinking about reading Holes to my 6th graders this year as our first read aloud. It seems to be on everyone's list for middle school reads, but I haven't read it yet and don't have time before school starts. Could someone please give me a synopsis, including all spoilers, of what it's about? Thanks in advance and I choose best answer!

  • How to determine nutritional content of a food you bake?

Ok, this is probably a stupid question, but I can't find the answer on google. I have a recipe for cookies that I want to tweak to make a little more healthy. I'd like to keep track of the calories and amount of protein and fiber in them. To do this, do I simple take the nutritional facts of everything I use to make them and add them all together? Or do things bake out or are there other factors I need to consider? Thanks for the help!

  • Help with figuring out gauge for crochet project!?

Hello! I'm an experienced crocheter, but I mostly work in the round and do projects where gauge is not essential. I'm going to make a shawl, but am confused about how to figure out gauge. The pattern says: Each pattern repeat measure about 5 inches across. I'm not sure how to check my gauge using this information. Can anyone please help me out? The link for the pattern itself is posted below, incase that's necessary. Thanks in advance!

  • Intel-based mac vs PowerPC?

Okay. I was wanting to play the Sims 3 on my mac, which needed to be updated to snow leopard. I went out and bought the snow leopard disc and now my computer says it'll only install on an intel-based mac, while mine is a powerpc. I don't know anything about macs and I have no idea what this means. So...can I get an upgrade for the computer I already have or does that mean I'd have to have a completely different computer for all this to work? Have to say that I've always been a PC user and now I know why.

  • What do the lyrics of Sara Evans' Bible Song mean?

I love this song but can't really figure out what the lyrics mean when they say: So I Ran As Fast As I Could

    Through The Tall Grass And

    The Midnight Woods

So No One Would Sing Some Bible Song

    Over Me

I'm wondering if the saying of someone singing a bible song over someone is a familiar saying that I just haven't heard before or if it has deeper meaning than that. Thanks for all the help. I pick best answer!

  • Red Pepper Sauce vs Hot Sauce?

I'm trying to follow a recipe for buffalo wings and it requires 1/2 cup red pepper sauce. I have searched 3 grocery stores for this up and down, even asked workers and I can't find anything but hot sauce. I'm sure they're not the same, since 1/2 cup of hot sauce would be really hot, wouldn't it? I don't have any red peppers on hand, but I do have cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes if that makes a difference. What should I do?

When I'm downloading clips or movies or whatever onto my computer, I have the option to change the video resolution of the clip and I'm given several ### x ### choices. I have no idea what this means and I'm not sure how to decide. When I transfer the clips to a DVD, I want them to play on the majority of the TV screen. Could someone please give me some advice on which to choose or how to determine what I need? Thanks so much! I choose best answer! :)

  • Need help with next Amigurumi Animal to Crochet!?

I'm in a creative mood and want to crochet an amigurumi animal. However, I'm having trouble thinking of something. I want it to be a little obscure, but not overly. I've already made the following so please exclude these from your suggestions: penguin, hedgehog, fox, dog, cat, giraffe, zebra, lion, chicken, duck, panda, elephant, etc. I plan on making my own pattern for this animal so it doesn't matter if there's not a pattern already on the net. Thanks so much for any and all help! I choose best answer! :)

  • Can I legally sell a crocheted doll I made from a copyrighted pattern?

I bought a book on how to crochet little dolls and inside the front cover it says the patterns, projects, etc. included in the book are to be for personal use only and not for commercial. I wanted to make a doll from this book and try to sell it. Is that legal? I don't want to sell the pattern, just the end product, which I followed pretty close to the directions in the book. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

  • Trouble with milky areas on wood table...?

I purchased this very neat 3-tiered wood table that was carved to resemble a tree trunk from an antique shop with the intention to clean it up myself. It originally had these white, milky areas on the surface areas, which I assumed would come off with a good cleaning. Well, I've cleaned and sanded the table and I'm now waiting for the first coat of stain to dry on it. I can't see the spots when I'm right by the table, but when I stand a few feet away, I can still see those areas, although their color is not as white as before. Perhaps I'm just being too picky, but I would really like to get those spots removed. Anyone have any idea what they are and how I can make them disappear? I sanded those areas quite a bit and I plan on adding at least another coat or two of stain, but am not sure if that'll do the trick. I choose best answer!

  • Vintage Crochet Shawl Question?

I'm trying to crochet a vintage shawl. I just finished the 1st row and am pretty sure I messed this up. The directions say:

1st row: *Miss 4 ch., then, into the next stitch, work 4 tr., 1 ch. and 4 tr., miss 4 ch., 1 D.C. in the next, repeat from * to the end of the row, ending with a half block (i.e. 4 tr. in 1 stitch), turn. The tr. stitches should measure a good inch in height and the top of the stitches be finished off firmly.

2nd row: Miss the half block just made, *4 tr. between the 2nd and 3rd stitches of the next half block, 1 ch., then 4 tr. between the 2nd and 3rd stitches of the half block that was missed (working over the 4 tr. just made), 1 D.C. under the ch. in the middle of the next block, miss the next half block, repeat from * to the end of the row, ending with half a block (in the last half block of the previous row), turn.

Now that I'm about to start in on the 2nd row, I think I've messed up. I did the whole first row giving each tr. it's own loop. Now I'm starting to think I was supposed to have done 4 tr. in a single loop (a block?). Was I doing this right, or do I need to undo the last row and try it with 4 tr. in a single loop?

I've crocheted blankets and stuff before, but this is the first thing I'm really trying off of a pattern and the terminology sometimes trips me up. Also one other question, while I'm here... It says to repeat row 2 until it's 54" tall or the desired length, but then below it has different directions for row 4. Does that just mean 'row 4' is the first row after I've reached the desired height or the actual 4th row? Thanks so much for the help!
