how should i wear my hair for prom?

im afraid if i wear my hair all up the shoulder area will look weird, and i kind of have traps on my shoulders from doing sports.

but i don't want it all down either. half up look perhaps? idk.

    any pictures or ideas?

  • Would an "uncommon" major boost admission chances? (Ivy league)?

First let me start off by saying I really would love to go to Brown University for fall 2010, and even applied ED.

I know my chances of getting in are pretty slim because my SAT scores are not up to par (about 40 points lower for each section than the 50% ranges given on collegeboard.com) and my GPA is 3.8.

However, I was wondering if my intended major (Italian studies) would be considered uncommon. If so, would it help my admission chances? (and make up for my low #s)

I have strong extracurriculars, leadership positions, community service, honors and AP classes etc, the interview went well (in my mind at least). Plus I have activities that support my interest in Italian and one of my rec. letters is from my Italian teacher.

Any insights would be great, thanks! (:

  • How should I update my college applications to say I am now inducted in NHS+?

I sent all of my college applications complete with a resume last month. Over the last week I have been inducted into National Honors Society and Italian Honors Society because of my grades and involvement in the community, etc.

How can I let colleges know of this update?

I began writing a letter, but I am not sure what the best way to go about it is... or what to say in the letter... or if the colleges will even look at my updates!

    any advice?

    thanks (:

  • Physics h help please!?

i don't understand how to do these two problems, can someone please explain them to me?

    1. A girl stands at the top of an 80 meter cliff. She drops one rock from rest and picks up another in time to throw it downwards exactly 2 seconds later with a certain initial speed. The rocks hit the bottom at the same time. With what initial speed did she throw the second rock?

    2. A girl stands at the top of a 50m cliff while a boy stands at the bottom on ground level. The boy throws, vertically upward, a ball with a speed of 20 m/s at the exact moment that the girl drops a ball from rest. Both balls move in the same line of actio. Do they collide? If so, at what height above the ground?

    we use gravity = 10 m/s/s

i don't know what to do to solve these, where to even begin. the textbook is no help.

  • What are my chances at Brown University undergrad?

I am in love with Brown University. It has everything i was looking for in a college and more. It really is my perfect match. So beautiful, so friendly. It's open curriculum is perfect for me. i could go on forever about it.

I attend a really good high school, but i have a B+/A-/A average with four APs and about 9 honors. (except regular math and sciences in all years but senior yr). My transcript shows that i have been adding more challenging classes to my schedule each year.(Ex. freshman yr i was only in english h, soph yr i had english h, world history h and italian h etc)

I have leadership ( elected president of prom committee/ homecoming committee/ cheer captain/ peer nominated 'natural helper' followed by a retreat of sorts/italian club officer), extracurricular activities (piano/italian club/class council all 4 years), work (local supermarket since soph year ), lots of community service (baby sitting/tutoring special ed kids at the library, religious education teachers aid at my church, youth council, UNICEF ambassador) and have been a JV cheerleader freshman - junior year. Silver honor roll (As and Bs) every quarter/semester in highschool. nominated to be an All- American cheerleader (this professional cheerleading organization). cheer squad one 1st at one competition and 2nd at another while i was captain. made a documentory about the holocaust and won 3rd out of 8 school teams in 9th grade. those are my only awards really.

Right now my SAT is a composite score of 1950. My SAT II's are 600 and 620. i passed the 2 APs I have taken so far w/ 3s. i know, bad.

    I am applying ED.

What can i do to get in? raise SAT scores? write amazing essays? I know those are obvious and i will do that.

should I independently study to take another AP test in May?

do you have any suggestions that may be out of the ordinary?

i will do anything it takes.

Do you think i even have a shot?

    be honest.

    thank you!

  • What is the point of living?

I know this has been asked numerous times throughout Yahoo Answers, but i'm looking for more specified answers. Most answers i've heard is that the point of living is to 'live'. My question is, how can we 'live' our life to the fullest when our lives are planned out for us? School, college, work, marriage, kids, old age, death. correct? When is there time for me to backpack across europe or sail around the south pacific without disturbing this 'path' paved ahead of me? Don't get me wrong, i want to go to college and be successful and have a husbad and kids. However, i feel that life is too short to take both the standard route and the out of the ordinary one What i'm really trying to ask is, what do we really have to do in this life? and why?

    please help.

  • Should i send these SAT subject scores or retake in november?

    US History - 600

    Math II - 620

I'm retaking the SAT reasoning in october, so if i took the SAT II's again it would have to be in november. I would not retake US history but instead replace it with another subject test like Italian.

My dream school is Boston College and they require 2 subject tests. Do you think it will be worth taking the SAT II's again?

  • I need an SAT tutor for over the summer?

i already took the SATs and was content with CR (620) and Math scores (640), but my writing score was awful (500). I really would like a tutor this summer to boost that score at least 100 points, but my dream is for all of my scores to be 650+.

Does anyone know of any excellent tutors that are in or around NJ?

  • which one - the ex boyfriend or the ..rebound?

i will keep this short. i am almost 18, for point of reverence. hook up = make out, nothing more.

ex bf - dated 14 months. first love. became clingy, felt suffocated. i ended it. still care. stopped talking.

one week later. date with another boy. hooked up. very nice time. complete opposite of ex. began seeing said boy frequently.

exactly one month later. (today). still seeing said boy frequently. tomorrow he wants to have the relationship "talk".

problem: last week began talking with ex a lot. yesterday hooked up with ex a lot. still have strong feelings for ex. more then willing to hang out with ex again. however, feelings for new boy too.

more: one, i am going to italy for 2 weeks. don't want a bf during that time. two, new boy is leaving for college in august. too far away to keep anything committed.

three, not fair to keep ex waiting if i chose new boy, but i don't want to miss out on new boy if i get back with ex.

what to do? who to pick?

    i have a heart.

i don't want to hurt either.

  • Guys POV: what does he mean by this?

I will try to keep this as brief as possible.

I'll start with saying i'm 17 and he is 18. I have known him for about a year now on friendly terms. The past month our relationship have turned very flirtatious. We work together at the local supermarket and usually spend our shifts together. Last weekend we hung out for the first time outside of school or work, where we kissed a little, and have been talking ever since. We both established that we want to hang out again. After our date on friday, he has been very touchy; tickling, poking, nudging, hugging. Everything has been drama-free and accompanied with a vibe of lightheartedness. I just got out of a very serious relationship, and he is leaving for college over the summer. I asked him what this is we're doing and his response was "I dunno? At the moment? A fun thing. What do you think?"

what do you think he means by that? "a fun thing" ?

  • can anyone help me? it's about richard nixon..?

can anyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE edit my essay ? 10 points i promise.. its just some of the sentences are just really awkward and i don't know what to do about them...

its supposed to explain how the alger hiss case launched nixon's political career...

Whittaker Chambers was a man who was “undistinguished in appearance and in background.” He was merely a “poorly dressed, pudgy” editor of Time magazine. Alger Hiss, on the other hand, was “a graduate of Harvard Law School, clerk to a Supreme Court Justice, an aide to Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Yalta conference.” He was the epitome of eastern establishment. It was Chambers who confessed his association with the Communist party and named Alger Hiss among others as well. However, nearly 90 percent of the audience believed that Hiss was innocent and that Chambers had lied. America was fooled by Alger Hiss’s façade - all except one. Richard Nixon, a mere first term congressman from California, catapulted his career by revealing the seditious crimes of the renowned New Deal lawyer Alger Hiss.

Richard Nixon was a self made man. He came from a relatively poor family of five boys and attended Whittier High school finishing third in his class. Although he hoped to qualify for a tuition scholarship to study at Yale University, Nixon could not leave his Southern California residence because his older brother’s fight against tuberculosis exhausted the family’s finances. Therefore he attended Whittier College to major in history. Sometime in his senior year, Nixon applied and was accepted to Duke University Law School. Paying off various fees proved difficult but he saved money by living very cheaply. He rented a room costing five dollars a month and saved money by eating a Milky Way bar for breakfast, shaving in the library, and showering in the gym. By graduation, Nixon promptly paid all fees and finished third out of the twenty-six in his class . Returning to Whittier to practice law, he met Thelma Catherine (Pat) Ryan and married in 1940. Nixon joined the navy in 1942, serving as an officer in the Pacific and rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. Following his return in 1946, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Richard Nixon was a member of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) when Whittaker Chambers came clean in 1948.

Nixon was the only one who believed Whittaker Chamber’s accusation that Alger Hiss gave copies of confidential documents to the Communists. Throughout this controversy of internal security, Nixon’s role was beyond question. On August 5, 1948 Hiss pleaded innocent. It was Nixon alone who was unimpressed and doubted Hiss’s credibility. From there, Nixon and five others had taken the responsibility to pursue this case. It was Nixon who prepared for Alger Hiss and Chambers to square off in New York’s Hotel Commodore and it was there that Nixon’s interrogation broke down Hiss’s veracity. He wore down Hiss’s denials of ever knowing “a man by the name of Whittaker Chambers.” by there simply being a relationship with a “George Crosley.” From Chambers, Nixon was able to extract details about the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Hiss and Hiss’s hobby of bird watching, as well as the questioning dislocation of an automobile – all of which won over the rest of the HUAC. To validate his testimony, Chambers went to Brooklyn to recover stolen government documents - some typewritten, some handwritten and some on microfilm - that he had safeguarded at the apartment of his wife’s nephew ten years earlier. Chambers, “with a sense of theatrics as well as in the interest of security”, placed these files in a hollowed-out pumpkin at his Maryland farm to prevent it being uncovered by Justice Department investigators.

As late as December 1948, the Justice Department had been ready to drop the case against Hiss for lack of evidence. They challenged the HUAC to produce solid evidence against Hiss or they would indict Chambers for perjury. Nixon demanded Chambers to produce these so-called pumpkin papers. On December 15, 1948, only two days after the dramatic uncovering of the pumpkin papers, Alger Hiss was prosecuted in a case that became one of the most divisive controversies during the cold war. Even though the Justice Department was as great an obstacle as any Hiss had been able to devise, Hiss was found guilty and convicted. For much of the way, the Justice Department was as great an obstacle as any Hiss had been able to devise. While the entire post-pumpkin papers proceedings was out of HUAC’s hands, it remains valid to say that Nixon’s persistence and diligence exposed the most significant breaches of security in Washington.

For Nixon himself, nothing matched the experience of the Hiss case. It gave the young congressman quick reception to political leaders in Washington during the New Deal days. If his diligence in the Hiss case was the ticket to fame for the thirty seven year old congress
