  • What is better, Lorazepam or Xanax for public speaking?

    Can people who have tried benzo's for public speaking anxiety please tell me how they have found these medications? I have access to them to help with a big speach I have coming up for medicine at university. I do not have access to anything else, apart from addrall, but that does not help in this regard.

    Please re frame from comments like "you should not need anything bla bla bla". I suffer from Hyperhidrosis, which means, I sweat extremely easy. It ends up being a 'positive feedback' problem where I am only nervous because I'm thinking about sweating, and then I'm only sweating more because I'm sweating in the first place! I actually have no anxiety problems otherwise, it's simply because of this medical condition and it only effects me when I'm in the spotlight.

    Thanks in advance people..

  • what does a reduced Glomerular Filtration Rate (20ml/min) do to how we metabolise drugs?

    Would it increase or decrease the speed at which we metabolise drugs? I think it decreases the speed, but not 100%

  • does dexamphetamine reduce protein obsorption? Gym?

    I'm prescribed dex (adderall for US readers). My question is since this drug speeds up GI movements (by softening stools) does it also mean that protein absorption is thus reduced? Is the Anabolic state disturbed? Would muscle gains would be reduced when taking this medication for someone who is weight lifting? (don't worry I do not take this medication while exercising).

    Obviously I understand that dexamphetamine is an amphetamine therefor it depletes appetite, but my question is not surrounding this - it is simply surrounding the possible reduction of protein absorption.

    Pharm question really.. (Med student, so can be specific with terms)

    Thanks in advance.

  • Does society and upbringing shape our desire fo slim women over normal/overweight woman or is hard wired?

    I was having a debate with a female friend the other day about 'why do men find slim women more attractive than say normal or slightly larger women?'

    She said that in some cultures and tribes the men are more attracted to larger woman, and I know this common in many places in the world. I understand it's seen as a wealth thing (if you can afford to be overweight you must be better off) and that they genuinely are more attracted to larger woman. I guess this makes complete sense for older, more traditional societies, but she was saying that it's culturally feed to us and we make up our 'image' of what is drives us to be attracted to certain looks from this example.

    My argument was that I do not think I could be made to have this thought pattern; where bigger woman are the ones I would be more attracted to. I think that its written into our DNA because they will be healthier and fitter child bearers. I see she has a good point because I understand that this goes on but I seems hard to believe I could think this way simply from my upbringing. Maybe its a mixture of both society and genetics? I think it's 80% genetics but I have no idea really. What do studies say?

    I know from studying medical science that our imagine of beauty and what we will find more attractive is written into us at an early age in life, long before we reach puberty, but obviously this could work for both arguments.

    BTW - This is not suppose to sound disrespectful to larger girls. I know that girls can be beautiful of all shapes and sizes for different men! I am just saying this from a personal point of view and this debate.

  • Why are new born babies always measured in pounds? (in Metric countries)?

    Is there some tradition or reason behind this? I know height is the same. Often we refer to our height as 6" or 6"2 even though almost everything else in everyday use is measured in our usual metric terms.

  • Working out concentration at equilibrium, easy question?

    I'm doing something wrong and I can't work out what

    For concentration at equilibrium as follows

    2NO(g) + 02(g) <> 2NO2(g)

    NO = 0.455mol/L

    O2 = 0.125mol/L

    NO2 = 0.0450mol/L

    I know K = product/reactant

    so why am i getting the wrong answer with

    (0.0450)^2 / (0.455)^2 x (0.125) ????

    Correct answer = 7.82 x 10^-2 Mol/L

  • Kleinfelters and hormone levels 400 TEST 16 FSH?

    I have been concerned I might be suffering from Kleinfelters syndrome. I have low facial hair growth, mild learning disabilities and I've always been taller than average (6"1). These are the only signs that I have found in myself - I do not have smaller testes/penis as disangoised by the doctor, but that alone that doesn't mean I don't have it. Anyway, my hormone levels came back and I am reading

    400ng/dl for testosterone

    16ng/dl for FSH

    My question is interpreting this data, as I know that my T is on the low side and FSH is on the high side (both signs of Kleinfelters) however, I have been reading mixed reports online - some saying that if you have Kleinfelters your FSH would be off the chart, and TEST would be much lower than 400?

    Can anyone advise about these levels? Of course I will find out more info when I go back to the doctor in a couple of weeks, but this is going to mess with my head not knowing until then!

    Thanks

  • Can you see if I have Klinefelters Syndrome from this karyotype?

    I'm studying medicine at university and I have recently been studying genetic disorders - Klinefelters syndrome has briefly come up. I think I may have this condition. I have wide hips, I have a larger male chest, and I have mild learning disabilities. I have a copy of my karyotype which I have included in the link below. Could any genetic experts tell me from viewing this if I have an extra X chromosome?

    Obviously I understand this image may not be detailed enough or a good enough copy, but I thought it would be worth asking the question before I go pay someone $500+ for a test.

    Thanks

  • corrupt mental health system - are psychiatrists paid to prescribe?

    I have just been diagnosed with ADHD and have been prescribed dexamphetamines. One of my friends who is a final year in pharmacology has told me that doctors receive kickbacks. He said that they receive $1000 payments from the government for every new patient they take on - on top of their huge fees (I paid equivlent of $400usd for 1 x 20 minute appointment).

    Can someone tell me how accurate this is? And if its the same elsewhere in the world? I was scepetical at first, but after realising how quickly they were to put me on medication without thorough anayalst and believe this is very possibly the case..

  • DNA question help! What exact stage uses ATP?

    I am getting confused about which exact step of the DNA transfer > RNA onwards for protein synthesis actually required ATP. I know how ATP is used, I just don't know which step! Is it in the RNA transcription stage or is it at the end when mRNA is binding to the ribsome for protein synthesis?
