  • If you have a union job, what are your dues?

I need to decide whether to join my union or not, and the dues seem high at $28.14 per WEEK. I only make $11.80 per hour, and I only get 32 hours per week. (Please don't use this as an opportunity to bash unions. I am essentially pro-union but just want to compare my dues to other union member's experience.)

  • Since "redneck" is now a compliment, what can we call ignorant people?

"Redneck" was once used to describe narrow-minded, rude, and backward people. Now suddenly everybody who likes meat and country music wears the Redneck label as a badge of honor. Any short-cut language ideas, or is it better to just say, "That guy is one of those narrow-minded, rude, backward types." ??

  • what would make up a minimum wardrobe?

How much clothing is enough? I have decided I need to "travel more lightly" and one thing that comes to mind is that I have entirely too much clothing. I am a teacher who needs to wear a shirt and tie to work and occasionally needs a suit for a wedding, etc. I also live in a cold climate. What do you think of this plan? Is it realistic? Have you ever seen a guideline for such a list?

    1 pr dress shoes

    1 pr athletic shoes

    1 pr sandals

    1 pr slippers

    10 pr socks (5 dress; 5 athletic)

    10 pr underwear

    5 undershirts

    1 formal suit

    5 pr dress pants

    2 pr dockers

    2 pr jeans

3 pr short pants for summer

    1 pr gym shorts

    2 pr sweatpants/pajama-style pants

    1 bathrobe

    5 short sleeve dress shirts

    5 long sleeve dress shirts

    8 neckties

    5 short sleeve Tshirts

    2 long sleeve Tshirts

    2 sweatshirts

    3 sweaters

    1 spring jacket/windbreaker

    1 fall jacket

    1 ball cap

  • suggestions for hip joint pain?

When I drive long distance I start to feel pain in the hip joint of the right leg. I think it's from holding my foot tensely on the gas pedal. What could help this? Accupuncture? Do I have to see a doctor? I hope not because I don't have insurance. I need suggestions because I'll be driving a thousand miles on a 4 day road trip next month. Thanks for any advice!

  • roman catholic eastern catholic vocations?

Should Roman Catholics who are in discernment about consecrated life and looking at vocations possibilities have any hesitation about exploring Eastern Rite religious communities? Would such a person have to go through extra steps to be accepted into that church before proceeding, or would they go in just like any other postulant?

  • painting of monks sampling beer?

I have a memory of seeing a famous painting of a group of monks sampling the beer they have brewed. They are shown to be clearly tipsy, but the artist conveys affection for them even while poking fun. I believe it is a German painting. Does anyone know the title or artist?

  • Book recommendations - 3rd/4th grade reading level?

I teach students who are special needs ESL kids. They are in 6th and 7th grade, reading on a 3rd to 4th grade reading level. I have been given funds to buy class sets of books. I want to avoid books with too many illustrations or that may be too babyish. Harry Potter is too hard for them. I'm thinking of the following titles: Encyclopedia Brown, The Littles, and Pippi Longstocking. Any elementary or middle school librarians out there who can recommend more titles?

  • policing children?

I'm teaching in a foreign country with a different set of cultural problems. The students are quite respectful toward teachers, but they have little "code of honor" in interacting with one another. They constantly scheme to get one another into trouble and then gleefully tattle. The level of bickering and backstabbing is like nothing I have experienced in 15 years of teaching prior to coming here. There is a constant stream of accusations, counter-accusations, and denial all around. I tried telling the students that I was not going to act on any more hearsay unless I witness the offense myself. However, my administrator told me that this was not an acceptable strategy. She says it is my responsibility to sort out the conflicts and teach problem solving skills. To be frank, I believe this is a cultural characteristic which comes from the homes, and it will not be fixed by any classroom exercises. How can I minimize my liabilities here?

  • Return flight - ok to board at transfer airport?

Will airline regulations allow me to bypass the original part of a flight and board at the transfer airport? I am flying from Italy to Toronto in July and returning in August. The return flight itinerary involves a transfer in Philadelphia. I will actually be closer to Philadelphia toward the end of my travel, and would have to BACKTRACK to get back to Toronto to catch my return flight. Can I just board in Philadelphia?

  • how do I report a porn image showing up on yahoo seach?

This morning I did an image search for "bow" in the classroom (i.e. ribbon and bow), and was shocked by porn images that showed up. Thank God there were no children looking over my shoulder. I can't figure out how to report this, which I think would normally not be Yahoo practice.

  • What's a good poem for memorization as a project for middle school students?

These are ESL students with pretty high fluency, but they aren't familiar with antiquated language and I don't want anything too hard to understand.
