• Suggestions for camping this summer in southern California?

At the age of 81 and an avid camper I have my favorites but I do not have many years of camping left. Do you know of a jewel that I might have missed?

  • Pearl Harbor Day. If You were old enough to have any memories of that time, Would you share them?

I was only 4 years old so I do not have specific memories of the day. In general terms I remember only that there was a lot of serious talking and people I had never seen cry before were suddenly crying. All my younger uncles enlisted and went to war. Even Tommy who was only 16 years old. He lied about his age and back then they did not check. Of... show more

Even Tommy who was only 16 years old. He lied about his age and back then they did not check. Of the four uncles that went to war, Tommy was the only one not to return. All through school, there were Air Raid drills. We even had those drills at home. My Mother worked in a factory. It was not until the war was over that I realized she was making explosive shells and several of her co-workers had been killed on the job. I remember the victory gardens, and it seemed like everything was rationed. I still cringe when I hear a siren.

  • Have you actually tried to get the Veterans discount at Home Depot? What was the result?

I made a small purchase there today so I asked about the discount. The Clerk asked me to prove that I was a veteran. I showed her my American Legion Membership card but that was not enough. She said I needed a government issued ID card with my picture on it that stated I was a Veteran. I told her that such cards do not exist for most veterans. ... show more

She said I needed a government issued ID card with my picture on it that stated I was a Veteran. I told her that such cards do not exist for most veterans. She them asked for my driver's license that indicated that I am a Veteran. That program is new and I will not normally renew my license for two more years. In short, for most of us who really are Veterans, that discount does not exist.

  • What is your feeling about defunding CPB/PBS?

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand they produce educational programming that is otherwise not available. On the other hand their news presentations are decidedly liberal and are less news than editorializing.

  • What was your favorite Christmas activity while in the service?

For me, it was 1959 at Ramstein AFB, in Germany. I strapped a small generator to the front bumper of a 6by and strung it with lights and garland, hooked up the PA system and We took the Children caroling throughout the base and housing area. Hats off to young lady who pumped and played that organ for the whole evening non-stop. Returning the kids to the Chapel, the ladies treated us to hot cocoa and a great variety of homemade cookies, cakes and candies. Finished the night with Midnight Mass. Eight years in the service, but that was the most memorable Christmas.

  • Vets, Have you been totally honest with your family?

It seems he did serve with the Army Air Corps and was an aircraft Mechanic. but he served in the south Pacific. We would like to be proud of his service, but we cannot piece togethr any of his military history from WW2. When the services separated and the Air Force became a separate branch, we pretty much know where he served, but nothing of the war years.

  • Do the services still have programs aimed at early to mid teens?

As a 14 - 15 year old Boy Scout I was in a group that spent our Easter Vacation. (you would call it a Spring Break) at March AFB for a grand tour courtesy of the USAF. That would have been around 1951-52. When I reached Enlistment age I obviously had very good feelings about the Air Force and I Enlisted. Do any of the services have similar... show more

  • Why are modern cars so totally lacking in style?

It would seem that they are either another copy of one wind tunnel model or they are boxy and ugly. It would be nice if the auto makers returned to some individual styling. It is nice that they are streamlined and efficient, but a little bit of style would be nice too.
