  • Why do scissor blades move away from each other when they are blunt?

I am trying to design a pair of jaws of life and need to calculate how big the blades have to be to withstand all degrees of motion, one of which is the torsional strain caused by the blades moving in the same way scissor blades do when they are blunt. Without knowing what causes it, I can't work out how to calculate it.
