• Is it illegal for a cashier to ask a customer if they want to add a tip for their server on their receipt? .?

Our corporate offices have changed the register system and customers can no longer get cash back for tips. They can volunteer to add it when they pay on their credit card (I work at a buffet, pay first, then eat), but the cashier is no longer allowed to ASK them if they wish to add one. • Help.....Tipping out?

I work at a buffet and get to keep all of my tips, but I am starting a new, (2nd), job on Tuesday night and we have to tip out to the bartender. I've never had to do this before and don't mind doing it as long as my drinks are made correctly and quick. The problem is......How much is fair. I've never had to do this before and don't mind doing it as long as my drinks are made correctly and quick. The problem is......How much is fair. I was asking around at my other job to waitstaff that had to do it in the past and have gotten several different answers. I've heard.....2%, which doesn't seem fair, 15% of my tips, 10% of my total sales. I asked my new boss and she says it is to my own discresion........so any ideas? Not sure if it matters but I live in Texas. One person I asked lived in Cali & worked in a casino before and the other lived in New Orleans, and worked in fine dining, not sure if that makes a difference. This is a " little restaurant/pub on the Marina with boat docks.

last night that as long as this person (employee's Mexican friend) has a social security number she could work here...she also said she doesn't care who's number it is as long as she could show she has one. I know for a fact that at least 8 other Mexican emps. are NOT LEGAL, and either working under "bought" socials or "borrowed" ones. I am NOT racist by any means, my son in law and grandaughter are Mexican, but as an American citizen...this OFFENDS the hell out of me! It is bad reguardless, illegal, immoral, etc. but some of these illegal employees are making it miserable at work. Customers are noticing the tension (racial) as well as other employees. Comments are being made of "this is going to be whites against Mexicans". I feel like they are breaking the law with stolen identities and causing a hostile workplace. Am I wrong for wanting to report them to Immigration? Why do I have to feel like this in my country? What would you do?

  • If you went to a restaurant, would you prefer your waitress to...?

ask you if you want a straw for your drink and butter for your bread, or do you think this should be an automatic? Your opinion counts, want to show this to my boss. I asked this last night but need more answers. Thanks to all who responded the first time! :D

  • What do you think about these dreams?

Not sure if this falls under the same category. One month after my dad passed away, i was at a party where my purse was stolen. In it was a pic of my dad that I carried everywhere. I refused to leave even though my mom was going to ground me for staying out all night. I fell asleep and dreamed that it was under the back balcony. Sure enough that's where it was. Once when my daughter was a baby, I was so broke I couldn't afford a pack of diapers. She went to sleep with no diaper on, laying on bath towels. That night I had a dream there was money in a coat pocket I hadn't worn in ages in my closet. The next morning I checked my coat and there was 20 dollars in the pocket. Same "i'm broke" situation a year later. Had a dream I found money on the ground. Next day was pushing my daughter in her stroller going for a walk, and found a 50.00 bill on the ground. Have had the same recurring dream about my mom 8 times since she passed away 5 years ago. In it she is sitting behind me on a roller coaster ride, I am in the front seat with my son who is a baby in the dream but is 24 for real. I could never figure out why I had the same dream over and over. I was telling a friend about it one day. That night, I had the same dream, but while going around the bend (in the roller coaster) my mom leans forward and says..."you know, I am always beside you". Awesome dreams!

  • Do waitstaff fall under some law that excludes them from breaks?

My bosses have said that we are the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY and that they don't owe us breaks...paid or unpaid..because the Entertainment Industry falls under different laws. They say we are not entitled to breaks unless we work double shifts....eg..11am til 9pm. So if we work 2pm til 10:30 pm are we not entitled to ANY break?

I have great personality, appearance, uniform clean and pressed, make conversation, know customers by name, never have empty drink glasses or piled up dirty dishes on the tables. I offer coffee with dessert and thank all of my customers. Why do people assume that a $1.00 tip per person or per family of 6 or 8 or NO tip at all is ok? I make $2.13 an hour and live off my tips. We tend to look upon these non tippers as trashy...etc. My mother brought me up to tip 20% for good service, 10% for not so good, and nothing for bad. I am an awesome waitress, very good at my job and am highly insulted by this.
