What is a good all purpose hunting bullet to reload for a .308? I am going to be reloading for .308, and was wondering what would be a good hunting bullet choice. I am leaning towards the Sierra 165 grain SPBT Game King, because it is relatively inexpensive, it seems to be in stock most places, and I have seen tests that show pretty decent performance on ballistic gel(also, my first deer was dropped in its tracks by a 140 grain Game King from my dad's 7mm Rem Mag, which can give one a favorable impression of that line of bullets). However, I was wondering what some other options are. Mostly going to be hunting deer(Upstate NY whitetails, probably 150-160lbs avg. around here, with the occasional monsters around 200lbs), but black bear are becoming increasingly more common around here, and there are some spots nearby that are developing a hog problem, so hunting those species is an option.

But haven't found any data using Trailboss for one of the loads I am interested in, the "buckshot" or gallery/cellar load(single #0 buckshot or .311 caliber ball over 2-3 gr of Bullseye, according to an older Ideal Handbook I got my hands on). Does anyone have any experience with this sort of load using Trailboss?

Ok, since I am getting a single shot .308, and getting some re-loading gear for that cartridge, and I was wondering what some good loads were for that cartridge. I'll get this out of the way now, I am not asking for specific load data, I will get that from a reliable loading manual, and I will always place safety first. I am more interested in... show more

  • Can a rossi single shot shotgun be reamed and tapped for choke tubes?

I have a rossi single shot 20ga, and am considering cutting it down to a more manageable length(a 28" barrel is a tad long in heavy brush), and if I do, I am thinking I might want to have the option of choke tubes to make it more versatile. Just wondering if the barrel is thick enough for that to be an option.
