• Are there professional dog walkers in Tokyo?

Googling just now turned up one lead (Petsitter Yamanote ACS) and I am contacting them, but ideally, I'd like to find an individual who does this "freelance". • Where's a good place to go, far outside Tokyo?

I have a friend in town with one of those tourist JR passes that he wants to use to use to get outside the city, somewhere remote and mountainous and, well, basically the opposite of Tokyo... I'm thinking somewhere way north, but I don't really know what's up there. (I'm a city kid, so I've barely left the inside of the Yamanote line...) We've already done Hakone, don't want to go to Osaka or Kyoto and want to go North. Can you get to Hokkaido on a JR pass? Is there a great Ryokan with an Onsen that you've been to that you can recommend? We're thinking of hopping on the train tomorrow morning...

  • Japan's Right Wing Groups?

I'm looking for contacts in any of the Uyoku Dantai groups in Tokyo, especially the Nihon Seinensha. If anyone knows someone active in one of these groups, I would very much appreciate an introduction for an interview.

  • What does Hakuna Matata mean in Swahili?

My nephew's girlfriend is from Kenya and said that when she and her mother went to see "The Lion King," they were confused by the song "Hakuna Matata" because it means literally "You have something caught in your hair" in Swahili. I'm guessing it may be a homonym or a dialect variant, but haven't found a corroborating source. Can anyone shed some... show more

I went to dinner with a couple of friends here in Tokyo to a Chinese restaurant. One guy is Chinese, a relative of the owner, the other guy, an American. The American guy said something about having seen the place and not come in because he heard they served dog meat. The Chinese guy, hearing this, ordered some dog meat, honestly thinking the other guy was interested in having it. (He doesn't speak much English.) So the guy gets this dish among all of the other things we ordered and were sharing and really tears into it, raving about how good it was. He keeps bugging me to ask what it was so that he can get it again, but he's a dog-lover and would be horrified if he knew. I'd let it drop, but he keeps asking. I'm honestly not trolling. This is a real moral dilemma for me right now.

In February, I dreamed that one of the women from my office was going to die in a car accident and within a week, she had been hit and killed by a truck driver who fell asleep, crossed the center lane and hit her head-on. I just had a dream that someone I know, but don't get along with, is going to die by choking on a steak sandwich on his lunch break, alone in his truck. If I told him, he wouldn't believe me. The other thing is, he's really not a good person—he hits his wife when he's drunk and his kids wear hand-me-down rags when he has a very expensive brand new truck. Should I tell him, or just tell his wife to double his life insurance?

So in about 9 hours or so, scientists in Switzerland will be switching on a huge particle accelerator that will replicate conditions present at the beginning of the universe, along with millions of tiny black holes that they say will be completely harmless. (Do a web search for "Large Hadron Collider".) Of course, I really don't think anything is going to happen, but since it's all this sub-atomic, theoretical physics, there is the intriguing fear that they're going to blow up the world, *or* a tiny improbability that we'll all be scattered randomly through time, dropped off anywhere from millions of years ago, to ten minutes ago. Here's the question: If you're going to be tossed back in time, where do you hope to go and how will you survive?
