Has any one got a good fruit cake recipe made from one of the boxed bread mixes ... like date/nut bread. etc.?
I had a really good one using dried fruit instead of the glaceed fruit. Different and very good with coffee or tea. All my recipes were lost in my last move. Any help will be appreciated.
My fig plant was developing nicely. THEN, a white powder-y crap attacked them. Now, they are getting dark blotches and falling off; the leaves are turning brown and falling off. Anyone know what it is and what can be done to stop it spreading further? I had my 'tooth' set for ripe figs and cream. sigh2 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade ago
A friend's birthday is upcoming and he is a nut for rhubarb and since there is no such thing as rhubarb cake ,,, thought I'd make him an upsidedown cake ... if such an 'animal' exsists
I need a recipe for a vanilla and chocolate glaze that hardens ... and after being applied ... doesn't remain sticky. Friend gave me a recipe for some really delicious crisp cookies with a suggestion they glaze very well but no recipe for a glaze and I'm sure, the glaze is one that gets hard and not melt when picked up with the fingers. Drives me nuts when I have to lick icing or glaze off my thumb and fore finger.
I've been to Belden's on Braeswood without success ... so ... wondering if there was any other meat market or food store that might carry "Vienna Products", which I consider much tastier than "Boar's Head". Even 'Central Market' doesn't carry Vienna brand.
I like them plain with mayonnaise, a little salt & white pepper with, maybe, just a tiny pinch of cayenne. All that other stuff, minced onion, pickle relish, mustard, etc., just hides the flavor of the egg but curious what other cooks use to make their stuffed eggs special.15 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade ago
Has anyone seen a recipe for the Chinese Almond Cookie using almond paste or Marzipan?
wherein it was decided 'apple pie' was more English than American ... so ... what is considered "American"? My vote would be for Jell-O ... any flavor. Any opinions?3 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade ago
Does any one have a good bar-b-que sauce recipe which does not contain tomato sauce, tomato paste or ketchup?
In the 50's/60's, there was a bar-b-que establishment in Dallas, Texas, named Shoemaker's. Served sliced meats with a thin bar-b-que sauce that contained no tomato products. They were in business for years with many stores but seem to disappear over night ... however, I 've never forgotten their bar-b-que sandwiches and the flavorful sauce. Got a really tasty sauce recipe with no tomato?9 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade ago
I had one ... given to me by a lady who worked for me. It was really excellent and used tequila and a lot of paprika. When I moved from the Rio Grande Valle to Houston, most of my recipes, along with a lot of other personal paper work, were lost. I'm tired of the commerical stuff and want to make some Chorizo sausage from 'scratch' and see if I can can close to duplicating my ex-housekeeper's recipe. Any help in this project will really be appreciated. I have several from cookbooks but thought if someone had a family recipe they would share ... the finished product might be more authentic.
I had dinner at a friend's house who was entertaining a friend from Mexico, who was the cook that night. Said friend was from a small fishing village on the Pacific coast of Mexico. I remember white fish, shrimp, crab and maybe scallops with a white Mexican cheese but don't remember exactly ... maybe the scallops and white fish were the same. Really delicious. Probably didn't use a recipe but I thought I ask to see if anyone had ever seen a recipe for this type chili rellenos. I thought the cheese was mozzarella but was told it wasn't. The hostess was very squirrely about devulging any information about the preparation or ingredients.
We've all heard about French vanilla as in French Vanilla ice cream BUT is there actually a difference between the two. Vanilla beans come from all over but have your ever heard of Madagascar Vanilla ice cream? So, does anyone really know if there is a difference or is ALL vanilla ... just vanilla?7 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade ago
Many years in the Dallas Morning News or Times Herald Newspapers, I cut out a recipe for a 'fat reduced' corn chip. It consisted of corn meal, boiling water, butter and salt ... dropped by teaspoonfuls on a cookie sheet and flattened with the bottom of a glass ... the column was written by a well known personality like Clementine Paddleford. These were not difficult to make but were time consumingo make. The chips were baked and not fried which took away all the greasiness ... unfortunately, still like 'Fritos" today. These were ever bit as tasty as Fritos and a liittle lighter in texture. My problem is ... I have forgotten ... how much corn meal ... how much boiling water, etc. Can anyone help?
Does anyone know about or have a Depression cake recipe using saltines crackers as the base ingredient?
A neighbor told me about this cake. Seems when she was growing up, a Hungarian or Checz neighbor of her family made this cake, two layers with a white frosting. At the time, being a child, she says she didn't care about the ingredients ... only that it was a delicious cake. I have a recipe for 'Ritz' Cracker Pie but she tells me, "No", that's not it. Anyone know of any such cake made with saltine crackers with white icing?3 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade ago
