I'm reviewing for upcoming biochem finals, and there's two questions on the review that I can't figure out. I'd appreciate any help with them!! Thank you in advance!! ::
1. If you label glucose with C-14 on carbon number six and feed it to a lab mouse, you may (or not) be surprised to find that carbon label in your RNA. How did it get there (shortest route, show all steps) and which nucleotide(s) would you find it in?
2. Assume you ingest some aspartate C-14 radiolabeled on the alpha carbon. Would you expect to find any of that incorporated in to purine or pyrimidine bases? If you expect it there show which carbon(s) should be labeled.1 AnswerChemistry8 years ago
I need to define "Macrosatellite" (not microsatellite) and give a link to the online source (so I need a website link). I've tried googling the term, but I can't find a clear definition. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out, and give me the link to a website that defines Macrosatellite. Thank you!!3 AnswersBiology8 years ago

~*.How many runs of the Z-scheme would it take to create enough energy to create one mole of glucose?
Assume it takes one 680nm and one 700nm photon to activate both photosystems in chloroplasts in the Z-scheme. Assume it takes 2870kJ/mole of glucose made. Assuming there is no loss of energy during the Z-scheme or its coupling to ATP, NADPH and ultimately glucose synthesis (not even remotely true, but it makes the problem much easier), how many runs of the Z-scheme would it take to create enough energy to create one mole of glucose?
Only problem I can't seem to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (:Botany8 years ago
Ok, so I'm probably doing a persuasive presentation for my speech communications class on vegetarianism/vegan-ism. I need to distribute a survey to the class of 10 questions, that I will integrate into my presentation. Does anyone have any ideas? I've thought of this so far:
1. Are you Vegetarian? Y/N
2. Are you Vegan? Y/N
3. Do you know anyone who is vegetarian or vegan? Y/N
So, that's all really. So I'm in need of some good ideas! Thanks in advance!3 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
Ok, so I've read up a little on video recording on the PS3 (it sounds like a pain). So I was thinking about buying a Pinnacle PCTV card, or a Pinnacle HD pro stick (USB) -- which would work better? Could I even use the Pro stick on the PS3? Or I was thinking I could use my PC, since my TV is PC compatible. How would I go about this? Would I just hook up my PC to my TV, and need some sort of program to record? Or is this not possible? Also, I may have an old DVR laying around -- how could I use it to record? Thanks in advance for the help! I would really love instructions on how to do this. :)2 AnswersPlayStation9 years ago
I'm going out with some friends to dinner, and they all want to go to Applebees (I don't care for Applebees, actually never have), and I'm vegan and don't know what to order. The last time I was there, I literally only ordered a lemonade -- but that was for lunch... I've read that they fry their veggies next to meat items, even though they use veggie oil. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!11 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
I am taking a speech communications class, and I have an argumentative presentation coming up. I was thinking about presenting on vegan/vegetarianism, but I think the topic may not be very interesting for my class, and being able to hold the class' interest is part of the grade. Is there a way that I can make a presentation about vegetarianism interesting to non-veggies, or does anyone have any other ideas? Oh, and I'm vegan. Thanks in advance for the help/ideas! :)2 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
Ok, so my birthday isn't for awhile yet, but the local ice cream shop (the only one close to me) that had vegan ice cream cakes has gone out of business. Now I don't know what I'll do for my birthday. I haven't had much luck making good tasting vegan baked goods, and would really appreciate some recipes or ideas -- that would taste good to a non-vegetarian too. Or should I just go to the sushi bar (and have sweet potato sushi and avocado) like I planed and not have a cake? This birthday is a big one for me - 21st - so I would like it to be good, especially since I'm the only veggie eater out of my friends and family. Ideas? Thanks!6 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
I have a new parakeet and cockatiel, and I haven't named them yet. I can't seem to find a good name. I was going to name my parakeet Neo, but I don't like it anymore. Should I name it Ninja? It's a bit of a spaz, and it isn't old enough for me to tell if it is a male or female. But if I take it to the vet, I'm afraid the vet will give me a weird look, like "Ninja, really?" lol. Maybe Mars, Leo, or Flash? -- Those are some of the names on my list. I'm thinking of naming the tiel Ari or Arden since they mean "eagle" and "eagle valley," and he - the tiel- looks like a little eagle. I don't know, I need some opinions. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! :)4 AnswersBirds9 years ago
I just bought a baby cockatiel today, he is 12 weeks old and the breeder said "I just took him off of formula the other day." I don't know what she was implying about this. I don't know if he can eat on his own. I've read that most baby tiels are weaned at 10 weeks, so he should be fine right? I've only had him for about 5 hours now, and I haven't seen him eat or drink. But he seems to be fine. He's preening himself and I've held him. He still has dried formula on his tail, it might be old. I'm just worried he won't know how to eat. I have millet and cockatiel food in his cage, along with a water dish. Please let me know if I should be offering him anything else, or what signs to look for, or if I should do anything since I don't think he was weaned properly. Thank you! :)
I just got a 12 week old male white faced pearly cockatiel today. I'm not certain what to name him. I kinda like Mars or Leo. My dad wants to name him Kung Fu. I've also had the suggestion of Flash. I'm open for ideas. I'd like his name to be somewhat short, if possible, so he can learn to say it (maybe). I have a parakeet named Neo (short for the ice cream). Pilot and Harley are off the list too (names of prior birds). Please suggest names! Thanks! :-)2 AnswersOther - Pets9 years ago

My tiel, Harley, just went through a traumatic situation this past monday. I let my birds have free range of my bedroom, on occasion. So my two younger sisters were home, and being teenagers, left the hall-door open. Well, our one dog knows how to open doors (the kind on my bedroom, not the hall), so with the hall being open, she was able to open my bedroom door. With that being open, I guess it wasn't long before a cat got into the room, and killed my parakeet, Pilot, and traumatized poor Harley. I called two avian vets, who assured me that if Harley appears to be uninjured (no blood or feathers gone) that they couldn't really do anything for him (he had some cat saliva on his back, but I checked him several times, and could see no blood or sign of injury). So, I spent all yesterday with him, and the poor thing would call for Pilot, and get real silent and start shivering. He kept closing his eyes and yawning, so I put him back in his cage in the afternoon, and let him sleep (I thought he was up all night wondering where his cage-mate Pilot was). So later in the evening, I bought a new baby budgie for him, since he seemed so sad, and I didn't know what to do. He didn't even try to interact with the new budgie (who isn't named yet), so I set-up a temp cage this morning, and put the baby budgie in there. And this morning, Harley was sitting at his food dish, with his mouth partially open, his face feathers fluffed out, and he had a few wet feathers around his beak. He also regurgitated some seeds (he has a sprig of millet in his cage), and wasn't singing or anything. He loves the lazy song by Bruno Mars (it has whistling in it), and he wouldn't sing to that either. I'm really worried about him, he's so sad, and now he's regurgitating his food and has wet feathers around his beak. Is there anything the vet can do for him? Should I bring him to the vet this evening? Is his sick? Thanks in advance for reading and helping!
My friend is having a baby boy next month, and her nursery theme is safari. Her baby shower is in roughly two weeks, and I don't know what to get her. I am willing to spend $60-80 on her gift, since I do have to ship it to her via FedEx, or something. She will be attending her shower via skype, and her shower will be at her mother's. I've looked at her registries on amazon, walmart, and babies-r-us, and most of the things on here are out of stock, or aren't really good (in my opinion). I want her present to be memorable and creative. I've already made her a pillow shaped as a lion's head (made out of fleece). I may make her a blanket and a bib too (if I can find safari patterned fabric near me). The pillow looks a little poorer than I'd like, so I'd like to make up for the low quality with a nice gift. I was going to buy her a 52" tall (or so) stuffed giraffe and a small gift basket, but my sister said that I should get her something more useful, since she doesn't have much money, and her husband is in the marines. Then I was going to buy her a bunch of various sized outfits on baby gap, but baby clothes are so expensive! I would only end up buying about 4 outfits for roughly $60 on there. And I don't think 4 outfits would be very helpful. What should I buy her? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!! :)6 AnswersNewborn & Baby9 years ago
I'm going out to the Cheesecake Factory tomorrow, and I looked at their menu online, and I can't seem to find anything vegan on there. Maybe I missed something? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!4 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
I just realized, that this holiday season I can't buy gingerbread men at my local bakery. :( This is my first holiday season as a vegan. And last Christmas I bought some to share with my cousins that celebrate Christmas. So, my question is: What's a good alternative to Gingerbread men? Should I try making my own (I'm not too good at making baked goods), or is there another festive treat that my local bakery will probably have that I can buy? Or should I stick with making sides for the party, and abandon the baked goods? Or should I just make vegan gingerbread men for myself? Thanks in advance!2 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
I'm unable to shop at my local Asian market tonight because they're moving locations, and I've been wanting a tofu dish. I checked Monday at Super K-mart, and I couldn't find any tofu there... So, I was wondering if anyone knew if Giant Eagle sold tofu? If they do, where would I find it? Thanks in advance!4 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
We're doing a gift exchange between all of the cousins on my one side of the family. I'm doing the shopping for my younger sisters, since they don't have any cash of their own, and I'm giving my parents a break from the holiday stress. There's a $10 limit on the gifts; they're not supposed to be anything major.
I'm getting the 6th grade girl a t-shirt that says, "Oh Snap!" with a broken candy cane on it, and the DVD of Happy Feet.
I'm getting the 16 nearly 17 year-old girl a t-shirt that says, "Santa I texted you my list!" and the DVD of Four Christmases.
For the 8th grade boy, I have no idea. If the limit on the presents were higher, I could probably find something good for him easier. I was thinking a Nerf gun, but I don't think that's a good idea. Last year we ended up with him too, and my dad picked out his present, and got him a cheap dart board and darts. I don't think my aunt was too fond of that. Any ideas?? I've been Vegan for nearly 4 weeks now, and I'm a college student. I commute and I don't have a meal plan, so I bring snacks with me or I buy from the vending machines. I'm here from 7am until 4pm, and the cafe doesn't open until 6pm for some reason, so I can't buy a fresh fruit cup or anything like that while I'm here. I usually stop at the gas station and pick up a bottle of water and a bag of chips. I'd like to bring some healthier snacks with me, that I can keep in my bag throughout the day, and it won't go bad or anything. I would prefer if I could make it the night before, and bring it to school in a zip lock bag. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance! :)5 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan9 years ago
