  • Where can I find information on going to school abroad?

I'm going to graduate from college next spring (BS in biology, concentration in biotechnology, minor in philosophy). I have good grades (not incredible, but definitely good), two summers' worth of research experience, and good letters of recommendation. I've recently been considering going abroad (probably Spain, since I speak Spanish) for a graduate degree in biomedicine, but I'm not sure where to get information on how European schools are different from American schools, whether my degree there would "count" if I decided to go back to the US, etc.

What is a good place to start to get my questions answered?

    Thanks!

  • Why are red blood cells in plasma?

My lab partner and I are trying to isolate platelet-rich plasma through centrifugation (we extract blood from a few mice, then combine the samples before centrifuging), and almost every time we've centrifuged blood samples, we've gotten the typical layers of red blood cells, "buffy coat" with white blood cells and platelets, then clearish-yellow plasma. But yesterday, instead of getting clear plasma, we got this clear liquid tinted red. We did the exact same protocol--the only difference was that one of the mice we used was very fat.

    Why would this happen?

  • Why are there no "renaissance women"?

I've looked up lists of polymaths in general, and NO WOMEN ever show up. Any ideas why? Any examples of women who could qualify as renaissance women or polymaths?

  • What "style" is this music video?

There's a "look" in certain music videos and movies I've seen that I can't quite describe, but I really want to know what it refers to. These videos usually take place in a crowded, darkish place (like a carpeted basement), have a lot of amber tones, and tend to have a slight ring of black around the edge of the camera, as if it's actually darker than it looks on camera.

The most extreme example that comes to mind is Fiona Apple's video for "Criminal" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFOzayDpWoI

    Youtube thumbnail

). There's also a few clips in The Strokes' video for "Someday" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knU9gRUWCno

    Youtube thumbnail

    ), at 00:12, 1:55, 2:17, and 2:19.

Sorry, this is a really vague question, but it's been driving me crazy. Is there a name for this kind of filming style, and if so, what are other examples?

  • Where can I find Odell Down Under?

I want a free version of this computer game that can be played on Windows Vista and/or Mac OS X. If it's not available for free download, where can I find this for a reasonable price?

  • How should I handle business/formal dinners if I have a food intolerance?

Over the past two years, I have developed intolerances to soy, gluten (wheat, barley, and rye), and casein (all dairy other than mozzarella cheese or butter) that make it incredibly difficult to eat at restaurants.

A lot of restaurants have a list of the allergens in their various dishes, so I usually order off of that or eat beforehand so that I can hang out with friends without feeling hungry or getting sick later. However, I'm worried about what I will do if I have to go to a dinner party or a formal dinner where the courses are all pre-selected.

I don't want to make a scene or draw too much attention to myself, but I also don't want to offend hosts and not have anything.

What can I do in these types of occasions? I've sometimes called ahead to make sure that the restaurant will have at least one safe entree; would this also apply to a dinner party, or is it better to just gamble on there being safe foods?

  • Ideas for a pop science article?

I need to write a science article for my student newspaper. I attend a liberal arts college, so I need to find a topic that is very relevant to non-science majors and easy to understand. It doesn't necessarily have to be a current event--it could explain an important concept or issue that most people aren't very familiar with.

    Thanks!

  • How do I calculate these entropy problems?

    I'm stuck.

    1. An ice cube at 0.0 C is slowly melting. What is the change in the ice cube's entropy for each 1.00 g of ice that melts?

    2. A large, cold (0.0 C) block of iron is immersed in a tub of hot (100.0 C) water. In the first 10.0 s, 41.186 kJ of heat are transferred, although the temperatures of the water and the iron do not change much in this time. Neglecting the heat flow between the system (iron + water) and its surroundings, calculate the change in entropy of the system during this time.

    3. Suppose the macrostate of a system of 100 identical coins is specified by the number of heads. What is the entropy of the state with one head (in terms of Boltzmann's constant, k)?

I'm not really looking for completely spelled out answers--I just have no idea where to start with these.

    Thank you so much!

  • What is a good topic for a physiology term paper?

The length is no more than 10 pages of text, and we have to pick something that will allow us to describe physiological processes and mechanisms. Examples of past topics are diabetes, steroids, dive reflex, and seizures. I considered doing celiac's disease, but realized that any processes I could describe were molecular.

    Any ideas?

  • Can I stop taking Wellbutrin?

I'm on 150 mg of Wellbutrin (budeprion) daily for ADHD. I know it's different from other ADHD medications like Ritalin and Adderall, but can I stop taking it for a few days without it negatively affecting me? Or will it cause side effects and take a while for me to get used to it again?

Yes, I know I should talk to my psychiatrist before I discontinue the use of any medication. I still want to know before I bring it up, though.

    Thanks!

  • Where can I buy rice noodles online?

I need microwaveable rice noodles in bulk--like ramen, but gluten-free (without wheat). I've found a few sites that have stove-top noodles, but I'm in college--so no hot plate! I do have a rice cooker, though, so that would work as well.

    Thanks so much!

  • Can I get away with monochrome black Chucks?

My aunt gave me a pair of monochrome black Chuck Taylors that she never wears, and I'm not sure if I should wear them. I know that they are associated with tacky Miami culture, but I don't know if they can be worn by "normal" people. I go to a small, Catholic, liberal arts college in North Carolina, but I still don't want to wear something that is...questionable?

Anyway, I would appreciate some opinions. Can I wear these, or should I pass them on to someone else?

  • How can I find this information about my school?

There are some incidents in my college's history that I want to look up, but I don't know where to look. Are there websites that have archives of old newspaper articles (as in, from the 60s) for free, or would I have to pay? Could I find these in a library?
