  • 1998 Honda - P0420 Catalytic below threshold?

    1998 Honda Accord (170,000 miles).

Service engine light comes on with 1 code.... P0420- Catalytic below Threshold.

BUT... here is the catch. It will ONLY come on when I am on the highway and comes on about 30% of the time (when on highway). It NEVER comes on when driving around in the city.

I am not convinced that the CAT is bad, but believe a condition (high speed) causes the sensor (O2 sensor) to read wrong, or read excess fuel (unburned fuel) getting into the CAT. I changed sparkplugs, dist cap, rotor, and sparkplug wires ( nothing to lose since they were old anyway). It didnt help.

Now i am thinking to change the Ignition coil that is in the Disptributor cap and the O2 sensor that is on the CAT. (When I got the car, i noticed that the O2 sensor on the exhaust manifold was new).

Can anyone tell me WHY the engine light ONLY comes on when i am on the highway and NEVER in the city? to me that says unburned fuel is getting into the CAT and what can i do to improve fuel burn? this is why i am focused on ignition items like sparkplugs and coil, etc...

    many thanks !

  • 2nd layer roofing shingles?

I have a roof that is NOT leaking or has any problems. but it is almost 20 years old and the rough "sand" is slowly coming loose. I have put shingles on other roofs ( 3-tabs) so I know what to do. BUT my question is this:

I plan to stay maybe 10 more year then move, can I just put a 2nd layer of shingles on top of the old shingles WITHOUT the underlayment, or do I NEED to put underlayment on top of the old shingles and then put new shingles on top?

I was thinking of using the old shingle as a guide for the new shingles. In other words, the starter row is on top of the first row of shingles. the first row of new shingles is butted up against the 3rd row of old shingles (covering the starter row and the 2nd row of old shingles). This is why I was wondering if the underlayment is important. Its easier to use the old shingles as a guide than to follow the lines on the tarpaper.

I plan to start this Spring in the year 2014. BTW I am using Owens Corning Oakridge Desert Tan AR Laminate Shingles... not the 3-tab shingles.

  • EGR valve (2002 Cadllac deville 170,000)?

Check engine light comes on. Code is P0404. something about EGR valve. I changed this once about 3 years ago and now its back.

Do I change it again ? Is there a relay I need to check first ? is there anything else I need to check? I am not too worried about changing it again because the first one has a lifetime warranty, so it won't cost me anything but 15-30 minutes to change it.

But I want to know why it has problems again then I would think it should last at least 5 years. No other problems with the car.

    Thanks

OR... if you know what i need to do to remove the "panel" post it here. Do I pry it off ?

    Thanks.

  • cadillac needs shocks.. which brand ?

    have a 2002 Cadillac

Whenever i put a heavy load in the back (vacation) the rear end of the car sags. I am going replace the rear shocks ( air adjustable). But i am confused about the prices and brands.

    I found the following...

Monroe $74.99 per set - lifetime warranty

    Gabriel $63.99 per set

    Arnott $324 per set !!!

I have NO IDEA why Arnott is that high.... so is Gabriel a good brand? what about Monroe?

  • disconnected the battery on 98 Honda... now P0420?

    1998 honda 150,000 miles VTEC 2.3L engine.

About 1 weeks ago the doors had trouble unlocking. So I disconnected the battery posts and cleaned them. No problem, but 3 days later when I was on the highway the engine light came on and the code was P0420 - Catalytic eff. below threshold. This only happens on the highway. If I clear the code and drive around the city, no problem. If I drive over 50 MPH, then it may or may not come on. Maybe once every other day (if i am on the highway)

What I am wondering is if I may have erased some learned code when I disconnected the battery? If so I think is silly to make the memory this sensitive. I should be able to change the battery if it is bad, without worrying about the "learned" items getting lost.

What can I do to get the car to relearn the codes or reset the factory default?

  • 2002 cadillac shocks sag?

my 2002 cadillac deville ( 150,000 miles) shock absorbers sag when a lot of load is put in the trunk (vacation). I know the air compressor works. I had the same problem on my 98 caddy and replaced both shocks and the air compressor at the same time. problem solved.

So... now I just want to do one or the other... which is likely to be the problem the shock absorber or the air compressor? is there a way to tell where the air leak might be?

Again... i know the air compressor works... i just dont know if the shocks are leaking or the air compressor is leaking. which is likely to be the problem?

  • how difficult is it to change a catalytic converter? 1998 honda accord, 160,000 miles?

I do work on cars ( brakes, calipers, water pumps, etc...)

I am just concerned about the heat and cold rusting the bolts. The CAT is not welded. 3 bolts on each end and remove an O2 sensor. If the head strips, do i just grind it off?

  • 1998 Honda Accord P0420 (160,000 miles)?

    4 cyl V Tec engine 2.3L

Engine light comes on ONLY when driving over 50 MPH sometimes (but never under 50 MPH). I clear the code drive around the city... No problem. Drive on the highway light comes on.. but only once every 2 -3 days.

Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold ( Bank no 1). That is the only code.

So should i replace the O2 sensor on bank 1 ? or the sensor on the Cat Converter? I bought this car used last summer and it looks like the O2 sensor was replaced sometime before I bought it.

other than that, engine runs smooth. Shoudl i also check for vacuum leaks or anything else?

    Changed sparkplugs last summer.

  • 2006 Mazda driver side mirror (how to remove housing)?

The mirror housing broke off the door. How can i get to the screws that hold this in place without having to remove the door panel ? It looks like i could remove the speaker cover at the front corner of the front door and i can get to the screws, but cant seem to find a way to pry it off.

Do i really need to remove the door panel? then get to the mirror housing?

  • PC is slow on internet?

Have a 2.5 GHz, 1 GB RAM PC, 350 GB HD (PATA), Windows XP 32 bit, have updated everything from microsoft, desktop PC using ethernet.

I did go to www.ninites. com and down loaded about 6 or so items such as java, quicktime, audicity and Adobe reader, flash player.

I just put in a new HD and formated it. It does not have a lot of things on it so it is not viruses and maybe has 5 GB of things on it.

runs fine when using MS OFFICE, playing games, etc... but when i use the internet ( IE 8) it is slow!

I know it is not the internet service, because i took the PC to work and it is still slow !

I looked at task manager and it shows 100% CPU usage most of the time when i am on internet. But when i get off the internet the CPU usage drops to around 3 - 10 %.

As far as RAM, i think i should be OK because task manager mostly says about 600,000 available when i am on the internet.

BTW... it originally hasd 500 MB RAM. then i bought another 500MB and it didn't make any difference... one question about RAM... the one i bought was for "266, 333 and 500 MHZ" what happens if the original one is 266Mhz and the new one i bought is 500Mhz ? could that be the problem ?

The only other thing i can think of that might cause it to be slow is my internet settings... what can i do to speed it up ?

    thanks,

  • If my daughter kills someone, can they sue the family?

I got my daughter a car... let say she runs a red light and kills someone. Can they sue me for my house? or just my daugther and the insurance? if so, is there a way around it? I know some married couples split ownership on things like houses, so that is one is sued, the other has 1/2 to hang onto.

  • Jay Leno in "American Dream" ?

Around 1985-1990, there was a song with Jay Leno in it and I believe it was called "The American Dream". I am not sure if it was on MTV or "Friday Night Videos".

Can anyone find this video ? I tried internet search and can't find anything close to it. I remember him driving a pink cadillac ( I think) and flirting with some girls on a beach only to have them run off because they liked some other guy better...

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

  • alternator wait 10 seconds before it starts charging?

1994 Buick Park Ave, 200,000 miles.

My father has this car that when he starts it up, the alternator needle stays at 12.5 volts. Once he starts to move the car then it might slowly go up to 13, then when he starts driving it goes to 13.8.

The belt is NOT slipping and the alternator is fairly new.

Is this normal ? or what should we look at? bad brushing contacts or ???
