i live in a two-storey apartment here in texas, and dreading the upcoming summer heat. it's already hot in my upstairs bedroom which has a sliding glass door facing the sun at about 2pm. i have already put dark thermal drapes on all windows, and all windows have the white blinds, but it's still 90-degree hot upstairs at 4pm. i leave the upstairs ceiling fan on all day just to help keep the temp down. im wary of opening the windows at night as i dont trust the neighborhood and dont like bugs/pests coming in. i dont know if putting tint/reflective surfacing on the windows will be approved by the landlord. i've read of a suggestion about putting potted trees/tall plants at the balcony as sort of sunblock, but i dont know of which ones that are easy to maintain year-round. i want to know of ways to keep the upstairs room cool in summer without the skyrocketing electric bills. please help.
