  • AWD vs. front wheel drive for New England Weather?

I'm considering a used Volvo V50, but it's a FWD. I live a somewhat rural part of Massachusetts, and right now I have AWD cars - how much LESS effective would a front wheel drive car be in winter snow?

I'm interested in learning Javascript, and possibly taking other computer software-related courses. What's the best resource to do this online? This would not be for "credit," and I am not overly cost-sensitive.

  • How to evaluate a potential roofing company?

I live in Massachusetts, and I need a new roof on my house. We called several roofers in our local town paper. Only one responded. He prepared what (to my eye) appears to be a professional estimate. He presents well (young guy, moved here from Spain after marrying an American girl). Very personable, patient, able to explain. But, he is clearly a "mom and pop" roofer. How can I tell if he's legit? Should I go with him or with one of the large, "corporate" roofers?

  • How can I identify an "ancient" coin I purchased in Israel?

Bought this coin for 20 bucks from an Arab at base of City of David. I know that the people dig up the area, and sell these coins. Seller claimed it was a Roman coin, 2000 years old. Who knows? How can I determine what this is? I can photograph and post it on a web page, if that helps.

  • Can I tell, from a visual inspection, whether I need to replace my roof?

I live in New England, and the roof is probably 30 years old. I've owned the house for 15 years. The house is a contemporary, with an extremely large roof, angled at perhaps 20% down from top to bottom. This roof covers most of the house. If I do need to replace it, which price range can I expect?

  • Calculating capital gain on sale of Schwab bond funds?

I do my elderly mother in laws taxes each year. She barely makes enough to require a return. This year, I discovered that she sold about $60,000 in Schwab bond funds that she purchased 5 yrs ago. I don't think the gains are enough to impose taxes, but I have to file a return. Question: exactly how do I calcuate her basis in these funds? All dividends have been reinvested each year. Thanks.

I've lived in a house with a septic system for 15 years. So far, so good, but I have to admit I'm clueless on how to maintain it, and I worry that I'm doing something wrong. How often does it have to be pumped? Is there any way I can evaluate it's "health" myself? What else do I need to do to maintain it? Thanks

  • FIOS very slow to connect?

I use FIOS with a Dell laptop/wireless. When I open the computer (which is already turned on), it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes for the Dell to pick up the wireless signal. Sometimes "repairing" helps, sometimes it doesn't. Please help.
